One lane of I-90/39, Milton Ave., to remain closed until 8 p.m.
JANESVILLE--One lane of southbound Interstate 90/39 and one lane of northbound Milton Avenue will remain closed until about 8 p.m. while county crews repair the overpass damaged in a morning accident.
“There’s a pretty big, gaping hole of where the unit went through the wall,” Rock County Public Works Director Ben Coopman said, “so there’s a concern about safety if someone were to go through that same hole.”
The interstate bridge over Milton Avenue did not suffer structural damage when a military wrecker went through the west bridge wall, he said.
Coopman and a certified state bridge inspector who was in the area inspected the bridge.
“Basically the only damage was to the wall and a little to the floor of the bridge,” Coopman said. “It didn’t do anything structurally.”
Crews are in the process of tying the steel reinforcements back together and hope to pour concrete around 6 p.m. Officials hope to reopen the highway and street around 8 p.m.
A crew from the Dane County public works department is assisting because they do similar repairs more regularly, Coopman said.
