(MCT/Gazette Staff) Winter returned with a fury overnight as temperatures plunged more than 40 degrees within a few hours.

The National Weather Service has issued a wind chill advisory for most of the region through Tuesday morning as wind chill values could drop into the 10 to 15 below zero range.

Janesville had a high of 48 degrees at 3 p.m. Saturday and was at 10 degrees at 7:45 a.m. today. Strong winds ushered in an artic air mass overnight. Some areas of Rock County reported wind gusts of over 30 mph.

Janesville Schools says school will still be in session Monday despite the forecast, but school officials are advising parents whose children wait for a school bus to consider other arrangements.

Forecasts call for it to remain windy throughout the night and overnight, with gusts up to 16 mph.

A wind chill advisory means that very cold air and winds have combined to create the potential for frost bite and possible hypothermia if bare skin is not covered up when outdoors.

Overnight and into Monday morning the temperature will dip to 3 degrees, with wind chill values as low as –15.

Temperatures are expected to remain in the single digits through Tuesday.

When I lived in North Dakota and had a paper route in a small town, I needed to walk to the North side and to the South side. I had two families, one on the North and one on the South who would take me in for a 1/2 hr to warm up again before i traveled again. Yes many of times Temps was -35 and strong North Dakota winds made it feel like 70 below. Nothing to slow down the winds in that barren country.

When I lived in North Dakota it wasn't unusual for the temp to get down to -45. This isn't even close to being cold!. This could be called chilly maybe.
