Superintendent Schulte on her way to China again
JANESVILLE – Superintendent Karen Schulte is on her way to China, district spokesman Brett Berg said Wednesday.
Schulte was at Tuesday night’s school board meeting, where the board approved a new policy that appears to allow the superintendent to form “strategic alliances” for the good of the district.
Schulte and school board member Kristin Hesselbacher were in China last fall, and Schulte said she would return to forge agreements with Chinese schools that would lead to exchanges of students and teachers.
Schulte has talked of the possibility of the Janesville School District hosting Chinese student teachers in February and both students and teachers in June.
In addition to bolstering the district’s Chinese language and international studies programs, the agreement could bring in Chinese students who would pay tuition, Schulte has said.
Berg said the trip was financed privately.

Students/teachers exchanging with another country is something that the Janesville Academy for International studies has been doing for years. Can they share the system I wonder??

I think an alliance is a great idea and could lead to a really cool program! If the trip itself is privately financed, even better! Why not open children's minds to other cultures in as many interesting ways as possible?

The Janesville School Board agreed to raises for principals and other administrators on an 8-1 vote Tuesday night. So many programs cuts they were looking to cut and getting federal aid for breakfast club. Are we going to teach Mandarin now?

Maybe she can impress the people of China because she sure doesn't impress many people in Janesville. The only people who are impressed with many of the administrators in this district are themselves. This truly is such a farce!

Gee whiz - first the incentive pay, now this? I agree with the "bad PR" comment !! At least wait for the dust to settle over the handbook, the dress code, the paid parking fiasco, and the other holes you've dug for yourselves before giving your adversaries more reasons to complain! Are any of the new candidates for School Board educated in marketing and PR ??

I think we need our superintendent here and not running around the world. This sounds like a game for wealthy school districts and not for one like ours in financial difficulty evert year these days.

I think the more alliances we have with China the less likelihood for conflict, and with 1.6 BILLION people over there less conflict is good.
Thanks to all of us China now has more middle class citizens than we do. I don't think we should ignore that.
Chinese people are a smart group, and I think both sides can learn from each other.
While I'm not a huge supporter of Shulte I think what she is doing is right, and I'll bet we eventually see some national attention to her visits along with some substantial grant money as well.
Let's wait and see what she's up to.
I'm just sayin'...

Sure, because there is just no way to contact anyone in China. You have to go there personally. Perhaps someday there will be a means to contact other parts of the world without actually going there. This is a sarcastic type post for those who were going to tell me they have radio, tv, mail, electronic media. You don't have to trouble yourselves.

What she is doing might be wonderful if everything was running smoothly in our district. But with todays challenges that face a school district I think her time would be better spent staying home and working on the problems of "today" that face our district. Yes I read the trip was funded by private sources ie:plane fare/lodging/meals... But what about her salary while she is in China? Is she going on her own time? Don't expand programs or start programs until you can get the current ones running as they should. I've heard of a saying that says --- Doing the right thing at the wrong time is still a wrong thing...

Seems they left alot out of this article, that would explain the importance of this trip (and even the first trip). I understand it is paid for privately (by her?), and is she using her own time or is she on the schools time? What benefit to have students coming here in June? Or is it we will send a student there in June and they have school? Is this the practice of other school districts to bring student/teachers here or there? Sounds like a waste of time and money to me, but maybe there is something we are missing.

Yes, the trip is privately funded. But, we are still paying for it unless they are taking "vacation" pay, comp time, or their "once (or twice) in a lifetime".

I support education (read my past posts), but if I was on the BOE in Janesville, I would have a difficult time explaining the value of this trip to my constituents - whether the trip is paid for or not.

I love how people seemed to have missed the last sentence in the article saying that the trip was privately financed. I think she needs to deal with stuff here before going on another trip. But at least I am not paying for it.

Did some of you read the article or just jump to the comments, it said the trip was paid for privately meaning not by the district.

I am glad I am not the only one this sounds crazy to. Let's see the district is always claiming they are out of money and need to cut or raise taxes, but then the Superintendant goes on her second trip to China in 6months? Oh and brings someone along? What is the benefit of this? Exchange of students and teachers? Unbelievable.

Must be so exhausting for her- overworked and apparently underpaid. School Board- you have a serious PR problem on your hands, or, do you simply not care about the taxpayer. Funny but I seem to remember how much you cared about the tax payer when you wanted to reopen the teacher's contract.

This woman is beyond words. We can only afford 2 assistant principals at Craig to handle discipline for 1600 students; we cant afford to fix the outdoor security cameras at CRaig thus putting everyone inside in jeopardy and on and on. Go and stay away Schulte. You will not be missed.

It’s main goal is about educating students/teachers. Unfortunately, the majority of the public only cares about the money aspect of it, thus the comment.

Ah, so it's all about getting money rather than educating local students.
