Wisconsin Senate passes mining bill
MADISON, Wis. (AP) — The state Senate has approved a Republican bill that would dramatically overhaul Wisconsin’s mining regulations.
The measure is designed to ease the regulatory path for Gogebic Taconite’s plans for a huge iron mine in the Penokee Hills just south of Lake Superior.
The GOP contends the mine would create hundreds of jobs. Minority Democrats counter the bill would relax environmental protections and open the door to pollution that would devastate the pristine region.
The Republican-controlled Senate approved the bill 17-16 Wednesday after nearly nine hours of debate. The state Assembly is expected to take the bill up next week. Republicans control that house as well. Approval there would send the measure on to Gov. Scott Walker for his signature.

jcommon: The problem here is about environmental protection. You want to mine here, you follow the rules and regulations that are there for a reason. Otherwise take your mining elsewhere!

How many of you anti-mining posters watch Gold Rush on the Discovery channel? How come I don't see you protesting that show?

The people who voted for this should have their names put on a plaque at the entrance of this mine to be revisited in the years to come. I wonder how they would have voted if they knew this was the case?

As long as they make their kool-aid with ground water from there. Drink up that should open up a few more jobs in Madison.

As I have said before, the tribes hold the trump cards and I doubt that the mine will occur under this bill. Maybe under an amended one, but not this one.

They have been mining in Iron County for a hundred years. This is a great thing for the area and the people that live there.
It is a good thing for WI.

Fortunately this is also going to be reviewed by the federal government and the Army Corp of Engineers due to its proximity to waterways. The big argument is as Tim Cullen puts it is Where does the waste go? The republicans have relaxed the rules for the waste some much that the programs for dealing with the waste contamination after the corporations have left with the money will now be funded by the taxpayers. This is a bad as Jim Doyle's train. Something else that the Wisconsin taxpayer to fund.

Who the heck do these representatives think they are trying to relax environmental protections? Do they care at all about the well-being of citizens? This world is going to hell fast. The only thing that matters is money and power, no matter who gets screwed in the process.

This doesnt mean a mine is coming, the tribes will be holding this up in court. If anyone has a legitimate argument here it would be them. Timm Cullen put it best, "This is about where does the waste go? It goes in the water, show me where else?"

Well, with the lock-step Assembly that we have, our environment is now dependent on Gogebic Taconite’s concern for our state and environmental well-being. Effective controls and oversite has been handed over to them. Feel good about that, do you?
