MADISON—Republican lawmakers are proposing a pair of sales tax holidays in Wisconsin in August and November.
Rep. Chad Weininger of Green Bay and Sen. Rick Gudex of Fond du Lac circulated a bill this week seeking co-sponsors of the measure that would waive sales taxes two weekends of the year.
The August sales tax holiday would apply to certain school-related items including clothing up to $75, a computer up to $2,000, school computer supplies up to $250, school instructional materials and various other school supplies.
The November sales tax exemption would apply to Energy Star products.
The sales tax rate in Wisconsin is 5 percent.

There is a place called "the internet"
where every day is a sales tax holiday.

janesvillean, you obviously don't watch enough movies or television. It usually takes less than a minute to hack into a government server and access a secure database. How much longer could it possibly take in your own business system to remove the state sales tax for a limited interval in your register(s) and record the transactions for those tax holidays, then do the paperwork on your taxes.... never mind. ☺

Larger retailers should have no problem, but this is going to be an inconvenience for small businesses especially. Sorry, hg, I have a background in IT and it is NEVER as simple as "a push of a button". Figure that your consultant gets $250-500 to make this change for a day and switch it back.
.
Of course they may simply be proposing a tax credit, which would put the onus on the consumer to document and claim, but it doesn't sound like that.

Joe295, in todays age of barcodes and scanners, it is just a matter of a click of a button. The same way something on sale rings up the sale price on the register instead of the full price on the tag.

PanamaRed, You have no idea how true your statement is. I agree 100 percent. If we could get the elected officials and appointed ones, not only State but Federal also, to cut thier pay by one month like you said, I would be willing to bet that the financial problems this country faces would drastically drop to just a minor problem.

My question to the article is, Will the county sales tax be cut for this time period also or is it just the state sales tax?

This would be a nightmare for retailers trying to keep track of what is exempt ect....

If these two lawmakers are SO intent on saving Wisconsin taxpayers money, I suggest they pass a resolution that suspends ALL lawmakers pay for a month. NO contribution to their health care premium and retirement fund, NO per diem reimbursement and NO paycheck.

Did these great thinkers ask the retailers how much effort it will take to convert some items from tax to no tax for two days and then convert back again. Some POS systems can not be programed to add tax on items above a certain dollar amount. COME ON MAN!

Oh boy! Save $2.50, $100 (if you can afford to spend $2000 for computer!), and $7.50. What nice guys we are, eh? Politics. Won't this hurt the income of the state, just like those pesky union people were trying to do?

More tinkering with the economy. And no thought to the inconvenience created! Stop already!
