Budget committee to take up Wis. mining bill
MADISON, Wis. (AP) — The Legislature’s finance committee is poised to vote next week on a divisive bill that would overhaul Wisconsin’s iron mining regulations.
The Joint Finance Committee has scheduled a vote on the Republican measure for Monday afternoon at the state Capitol. Approval would set up votes in the full Senate and Assembly.
Passage is all but certain. The GOP controls the finance committee as well as both legislative houses and Republican Gov. Scott Walker has touted the bill as his signature job creation project.
The bill is designed to ease the regulatory path for Gogebic Taconite’s plans for a giant open-pit iron mine just south of Lake Superior. Environmentalists and Democrats insist the bill would allow the company to pollute the pristine area.

The tribal members needs to clean up their own backyard, instead of making accusations about the mining bill being proposed.

The point was.....the Oneida had qualms about hurting the environment when they were trying to build their plant, as long as it wasn't on THEIR land. Why hasn't anyone heard about that story?

the local politicians in the north woods are against this legislation because it will destroy the economic base of the region...Lake Superior is 10% of the worlds fresh water...how can we justify acid mine drainage in the Superior watershed? we can't, and we shouldn't let Gogebic write the legislation...

wislady has proven herself incapable of holding an independent thought a long time ago. Party line talking points given to her are about all she can muster.

Wislady why do you always have to bring up another point and try to take away from the story? How about this, look at each issue individually and not blame the other side for everything?

Ah yes, Scott Walker and the Republican's effort to screw up the environment in Northern Wisconsin.

What do you expect when he lets the out-of-state mining company write the bill? Who do you think he is working for?

Where were all the environmental people last year when "a "waste-to-energy" recycling plant proposed by Oneida Seven Generations (OSG), an entity which has ties to the Oneida tribe, were given a permit?
The permit got rescinded because the city council felt they were deceived by the OSG group. The first attempt was in Green Bay, now the group has moved the project to Outagamie county. The Oneida didn't want the project on "their" land because they were concerned with the environment

This whole bill is a subterfuge for the guv and the rest of the repubs. They know this thing will never fly, but it gives them another excuse for no job growth. Their complaint will be" we tried to create jobs, but the tribes, democrats and trial lawyers stopped us". Woe is us.

Republicans will ramrod this shoddy bill through, rather than doing the right thing. It will get tied up for years in the legal system and the tax payer will have to pay thousands if not millions to defend this Republican turd.

How about the fact that even if the bill is approved the Army Corp of Engineers have to approve and the Tribes will have the ability to file lawsuits at the Federal level that will keep any mine in court for a long time. How about address the real needs of Wisconsin?

It seems to me that if they were to put the facts out for the world to see and report on what is actual going to take place there no one in there right mind would let it happen. As to the need for the iron I sold all my scrap metal about 4 years ago when the price was alot higher than it is now and China was buying it so we could buy it back because they have the manufactering jobs WE threw away. If you want to make this mine safe make all the government types and supporters drink the ground water from the mined area!

Just once I would like to see someone actually address the issue of the environmental concerns rather than just repeating the same old talking points. Yeah, we get it, Republicans say it just streamlines the process and Democrats say it leaves the environment vulnerable. I have yet to see a journalist of any sort do any sort of investigative reporting or try and get ANY answers whatsoever. GET TO IT! Do something to benefit the people of WI once and a while and give them actual information rather than regurgitating tired old talking points every few weeks that have been spoon fed to you by a no nothing politician
-
I have read the bill and there are some things I would really like answered. Mainly about section 55 293.50 where they have purposefully "re-defined" what a sulfide ore body is to specifically exclude iron containing sulfides from environmental restrictions.
-
why would a bill do this? who would it benefit? The state of WI? or the mining company poised to dig a whole 1,000 feet deep, 4 miles wide and 20 miles long? That's a lot of waste rock and a heck of a lot of potential Acid Rock Drainage in that area. But no journalist can touch that in their reporting I guess. Are you too lazy to do any real work?
