Some folks are finding out that those "cool" 18" wheels and low-profile high performance tires don't really "perform" at all in the snow. Tire technology and design has changed a lot in the recent years. If your tires are not at least M&S (mud & snow) rated, stay home. If you want to be able to drive in the snow we commonly get in Wisconsin, get tires that have the "Mountain/snowflake" symbol...snow tires. Of, course the tire companies promote this, and get to sell you two sets of tires, summer ones and winter ones. Conspiracy?
dakman, I think you're right, he probably hadn't been on duty long. When I was there, there were people spinning tires on the bridge before they even got as far as the hill. By the time I got across the bridge, he was directing traffic to give people the following distance they needed. It was enough to begin clearing things out, finally. Still got my daughter to school late, but we made it there in one piece, and with no vehicle damage. I'll take that as a success for the morning.
nonprofiter, he must have gotten there later. Me and about 30 other cars were stuck behind two idiots trying to make it up the small hill after the lights on Center (near the VFW).
LOL yeah steep hills, slushy snow/rain mix and starting from a dead stop, this is why I avoid those routes when it snows, I have been behind vehicles with bald tires more than once.
Thank you to the JPD officer who was directing traffic at Center Ave. and Delavan Drive this morning. Dangerous work, did his best to keep us all safe. Kudos.
NO KIDDING! Why wasnt it told that its WHITEOUT conditions early this morning??? I mean, Im not blind..but I had no idea at 6am that it was going to be as bad as it was...Hwy 14..Newville Road..hwy 11..actually ANY highway was like driving blind!

I'm kidding about the v rated tires. I can't afford them. But I am one of "those" with the 16" performance tires and they suck in snow.

fru - how are they working for you today?
A "V" speed rating probably is not needed for today's roads. Maybe tomorrow?
