Third annual JAC Awards raises more than $4,000
JANESVILLE—Local supporters of the arts raised more than $4,000 on Saturday night during the third-annual Janesville Area Creativity Awards, according to a news release from event organizers.
More than 200 people attended the show at Janesville Performing Arts Center, according to the news release. They watched performances by dancers, singers and musicians. Winners earned trophies that had been decorated by Craig High School art students.
Some categories were judged by selected community volunteers. Others were “people’s choice.” Attendees voted by putting money in ballot boxes. Each dollar was worth one vote. Most of the proceeds will be used for scholarships sponsored by the United Arts Alliance.
According to the news release, the winners in the judged categories are: Roots Award, Ben and Josh Calhoun, singer/songwriter team; emerging star, Tyler Kerbel, dancer; fine artist, Jim Richter, painter; photographer, Jessica Gutzman; creative writer, Jim Lyke, screenwriter; music educator, Lannette Calhoun; art educator, Gee Gee Janene; hair designer, Abby McGuire.
The winners in the People’s Choice categories were: best actor, Jacob Schmidt, Parker High School’s Miss Saigon; best actress, Jasmine Bianes, Parker High School’s Miss Saigon; theater production, Miss Saigon; original film, “Tripping with the Planketts” by Drywater Productions; original song, “For You Today” by Evan Riley; solo performer, Teryn Bordwell, Dance Attitudes; dance group, Dance Attitudes; live band, Jazzguise; culinary artist, Italian House.

It was a really fun evening, a chance to see amazing local talent all in one place, AND to contribute to local scholarships! Hope more folks are on the lookout to attend next year. Thanks to UAA for all the hard volunteer work to make it a success.

Unfortunately, there was an error in the list of winners provided to the Gazette. The Music Educator award went to Lynne Meding. The UAA regrets the error.
