Walker to propose GPS monitoring, DNA collection

MADISON, Wis. (AP) — Gov. Scott Walker wants to spend $3 million to expand GPS tracking for some people on restraining orders and $6 million to collect DNA samples from everyone arrested for felonies.

The expanded DNA collection Walker is proposing would also include anyone convicted for any crime and those arrested for certain misdemeanor sexual crimes. Walker says that will result in DNA data being collected from 68,000 people a year.

Walker was touring the state with Attorney General J.B. Van Hollen to discuss the $14 million in law enforcement initiatives that will be included in his budget to be released next week.

Walker is also calling for $1 million to hire five new full-time employees at the task force that works to stop Internet crimes against children.

Whatever was said, it was out of your passion for Scott Walker. But still, I must say I am surprised by it.

Now go ahead and have the Patriotic last word for the cause of Freedom and all that is good in the Nation. Lol.

brother...source you cite for this accusation? You must have some proof of some of this million being earmarked for his personal payback.

donnaw - you clearly are a devotee of all things Walker.

I did mention they would have to outfit them with workstations and of course compensate the employees. Benefits are assumed to be part of compensation package - but you may not have worked at a job in a while (or ever) and not know this basic info.

Professional compensation packages of $125,000 X 5 = $625,000. So you say it costs $75K per person to outfit them? ...maybe Scotty's friends at Phones Plus can cut them a deal.

Hey, maybe that million is a real number they need. Perhaps that figure is itemized somewhere? I am not kidding. But that is how it goes when you spend public money, right? - you have to account for it. Which is why weasels like Scotty would rather privatize it all to his friends and have little accountability.

brother....so the five new employees will sit on the floor and use sign language to communicate....no offices, desks, chairs, computers, phone systems, benefits, etc? Or maybe they can play musical chairs with the current employees and when one of them goes to the bathroom they can use their desk for a few minutes?

donnaw - the proposal does say $1 million to add 5 employees. The morons know that employees will need training and workstation. However, it is an existing task force, they aren't starting from scratch here with their infrastructure.

I am sure though that Scotty will not make such a mistake of being transparent going forward. He can outsource it like he does with the multi-million dollar spending and the privatized dealmaker can pocket the millions and pay the workers a fraction of it, depending on if they are outstate or even offshore.

You really need to brush up on your open-for-business version of capitalism.

You morons who think $1 million for hiring 5 people is strictly for salaries are really stupid. Do the words "stop Internet crimes against children" mean anything like maybe they will need to invest a lot of the budget in sophisticated computers and other Internet programs and equipment to get those who are committing these crimes? Office space, desks, etc. you Walker haters are something else.

I bet Scotty is kicking himself for not finding a way to privatize that task force. The $3 and $6 million ...who knows how that is spread. No accountability-another perk of privatizing.

"The recidivism rate for prisoners released from prison within one year is 44.1%; this number rises to 67.5% within three years of being released from prison."

The reality is that crime is committed by a small subset of society - tracking them more closely is quite beneficial to quickly solving the crimes they commit. With any luck, we can eventually justify decriminalizing most drug offenses to free the space needed to properly incarcerate the real criminals.

Walker is buffoon. Are people for less gov't or more? Convicted Felons are already DNA'd. Accused are not guilty of anything and should be treated as such. GPS? Are there people that really think this is going to do anything? I swear people don't think anything thru anymore, just knee jerk their way thru life.

I thought Republicans want less government. Now a Republican Governor wants to monitor citizens with tax payer money. Sounds like a double standard. This must be the new face of the Republican Party.
