US Cellular to move and expand

JANESVILLE--A new U.S. Cellular regional center—the largest in the state—should open before the holiday season at the former site of Arby’s Restaurant on Milton Avenue, according to city and company officials.

Arby’s last spring moved up the street into the vacant Del Taco near Menards.

The new U.S. Cellular store will be developed by Marwood Corp. and will be larger than the phone company’s facility in the Janesville Plaza, 2431 Milton Ave.

A company official described the new store as the only full-sized “corporate store” between Madison and Rockford, Ill. The store will hire more employees and serve more customers than the current facility, which will be closed. It also will offer classroom training for customers and employees, said Glen Todd, who works in the U.S. Cellular real estate and facilities for.

The development will result in improved traffic flow in the area, said Duane Cherek, Janesville city planning services manager.

As part of the development deal, Marwood will give the city an easement behind Kwik Trip so the city can build a road to connect to the Menards roundabout.

Marwood also agreed to improve the access road between Kwik Trip and the new development. Some details still need to be worked out, Cherek said.

I like the fact that it will be easier to access the roundabout. Good move for US CELL, and good news with a few more jobs and the training center.

I agree, this is a positive move for US Cellular and Janesville. But have to seen the city's plan to "improve traffic flow" in that area?! They're basically going to use the existing alleyway between the strip mall and Kwik Trip to connect to the three-lane street on the Menard's development. Creating yet another bottle neck/cluster of an intersection in Janesville. I expect more from our city planners! Their current plan is a joke!

Since there will be an access road built behind Kwik Trip, this might be a good time to eliminate left turns exiting from the Kwik Trip/Old Arby's road onto Northbound Milton Avenue. Those wanting to turn left onto Northbound Milton Avenue can use the lights at Menards. This would allow easier access for a left turn into the Kwik Trip/Old Arby's from the Milton Avenue Northbound lane. Just a thought.

After reading most of the earlier comments I am nothing short of astounded. Mostly negative! Wow, a business expands and intends to hire more people, and all most of you do is bitch.

"before the Holiday? Which one? Doesn't seem much bigger to me either. All those businesses on those roads stink to get to.

It was a restaurant at one time with good business and caused no issues. Bassman it will not be a nightmare unless you are dreaming and you forgot to pay your bill and they shut your phone off.... Arby's moved to bigger location and closer to Interstate..... Good news as to jobs and even if it is a few jobs IT IS JOBS..

Its a busy area, not a "nightmare." US Cellular is a destination store, people plan to go there. During peak traffic times I find it much easier and less stressful to use Morse and Bell Streets.

I feel dumber from having read some of the comments to this article.

They'll expand the building and improve access to that strip mall, creating an additional entrance/exit point. That'll help relieve the congestion between the "old" Arby's and Kwik Trip. They've already got the road partially built from the safe, easily navigated roundabout toward the strip mall.

Larger? Am I thinking of the right place... the old Arby's? That is bigger than than the current US Cell facility? The old Arby's property seems like a postage stamp compared to where they are. There is a huge parking lot where they are now so unless I'm not painting a good image in my mind it seems they will be going to a smaller

bennetonf1, I agree with you this is very positive but I also agree with the others that intersection can be a pain, but that is on the business owners and the city to make it better. I am interested to see how this plays out.

Did anybody get the part about a business EXPANDING? This may mean MORE JOBS for the area. This is POSITIVE news. If scary traffic gets your undies in a bundle DON'T GO.

The entire point of the access road connecting to the roundabout was to reduce the nightmare.
.
Of course this type of multi-lane highway with frontage road and multiple small businesses each with their own parking is a type of development that produces traffic nightmares. It's worse still when adjoining property owners don't want the same thing and engage in a years-long feud preventing connections between their properties. At least Marwood has finally come around.

BASSMAN - I agree with you on the " getting in and out" - It is a mightmare. You have semi trucks delivering gas, lots of cars coming in & attempting to cross the intersection to get out. This seems like a strange decision.
