Jury convicts Wisconsin John Doe defendant
MILWAUKEE—A Milwaukee County jury has convicted one of Gov. Scott Walker’s former associates of stealing money donated to help veterans and their families.
Jurors Friday convicted 62-year-old Kevin Kavanaugh of Cudahy of stealing more than $51,000.
Prosecutors alleged that Kavanaugh had skimmed the money from bank deposits and phony withdrawals from accounts for the Military Order of the Purple Heart, a veterans service organization.
The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reports Kavanaugh said nothing following the verdict. Sentencing is set for Dec. 7.
The defense argued Kavanaugh was simply a terrible bookkeeper.
Walker appointed Kavanaugh to the county Veterans Service Commission when Walker was Milwaukee County executive.
Kavanaugh was charged as part of a secret investigation Milwaukee prosecutors launched into Walker’s office. The governor has not been charged with any wrongdoing.
