Wisconsin elections board warns about confusing mailers

By ASSOCIATED PRESS   Monday, October 8, 2012 - 4:18 p.m.

MADISON—Wisconsin election officials are warning voters to be cautious about slick mailings giving misleading or incorrect information about voter registration and absentee voting.
The Government Accountability Board said in a release Monday that it and local election officials around the state have been receiving an increasing number of questions and complaints and recent mailings that contain errors that could interfere with voting.
One of the mailings in question from the Republican Party of Wisconsin incorrectly told residents in the heavily Democratic areas of Madison and Dane County to return voter registration applications to the town of Albion, even if they did not live there.
Board director Kevin Kennedy recommends that voters rely on information from their local municipal clerk’s office or the Myvote.wi.gov website.
In-person early voting begins Oct. 22.

Still waiting for some of those examples of the GAB warning Democrats over sending mailers misleading voters on voting rules.

Patriot GOP are the party of Richard Nixon. Spiro Agnew. The torch has been passed to Karl Rove etc, - to now where dirty tricks is standard Patriot operating procedure.

Wasn't deliberate disinformation a common tactical tool used by the Bolsheviks in the USSR up through Stalin's time? Wasn't the father of the Koch brothers exploiting oil supplies there at that time? Did he learn anything about capitalism from the communists? It seems his children have learned well how to exploit and corrupt a capitalistic society as well. Maybe history doesn't repeat itself but it sure makes one think.

Could a patriot refresh our memory of the time the GAB had to reprimand the democratic party for sending fraudelent mailers on voting rules?

I know democrats have done crooked things. But I don't recall anything quite like this. Y'all keep saying they both have dones this - yet I cannot recall. Now is a chance to refresh our memories.

The rat in this story are the people that are intentionally trying to suppress and confuse voters. Instead of yelling squirrel as you have been accused of time and time again, you literally posted a picture of a rat.

What horse crap. This kind of stuff needs to stop from both sides. Both sides make mistakes, but doing this stuff to purposely confuse people is unethical in my book. The really sad thing is that it is not only both sides, but the GAB also makes mistakes.
BTW, brotherkoch, Mitt Romney has to adhere to the exact same tax rates as You, I, Obama, and every other US taxpayer does, insinuating otherwise is a flat out lie.

Wasp..I do believe there are convicted felons in jail serving terms who shouldn't be allowed to vote. I'm saying before giving the inmates a ballot the deputy could check their computers for current felon status before giving them a ballot. They don't have to ask the inmate anything. Yes there are inmates awaiting trial who are eligible to vote. I'm only concerned with those who are INELIGIBLE to vote. Now, did I type slow enough for you?

donnaw - I know this can be confusing for you, so I am typing really slow. A person could be a convicted felon and have served their time. Then be in jail awaiting trial on another charge not necessarily guilty of anything. You know that troublesome old constitution thing, innocent until proven guilty. Convicted felons are usually in prison because their sentence is more than a year. Do you read what I post? The court doesn't allow them to ask their status.

wasp..do you ever read my whole posts, rather than pick out a few words. These guys are in jail currently so how could they vote if they are currently serving time for a felony or on parole? They have to have finished their sentence and not be on parole. It would take the sheriffs deputy one second to check their status but the sheriff directed the deputies to not check any status. Sounds a little sleazy to me. jMO. Again, goes on in both sides...I don't condon either side doing this. Republicans are not above pulling sleazy things either. We as citizens should not tolerate it on either side.

Donnow do you ever check the law on the things you post? First of all I will reiterate FELONS CAN VOTE. If they are eligible, or not is not the sheriffs job. It is a legal requirement of the clerk of courts and has been decided by the court.

wislady is just my favorite poster, the democrats do it too. No evidence. Felons are voting. OMG! I have a newsflash for you my dear. Felons can legally vote in Wi. as long as they have served their term and aren't on parole. Why can't you just face facts republicans can't win if everyone votes. So they try to suppress votes in heavy democratic areas like Madison.

How about criticizing the Dane County sheriff who directed his deputies to distribute and assist in the completion of absentee ballots to jailed inmates WITHOUT CHECKING TO SEE IF THEY WERE FELONS. Voter fraud happens on both sides. Get over it. And who is going to investigate Dane County sheriff? Are you kidding? He will get a medal!

Wislady, you haven't said that you condemn someone sending a misleading mailer like the one described in the article. I'm not insinuating that you approve, I'm flat out saying it. You refuse to say that you think what was done here is wrong. I think you refuse to admit that anything the Republicans do is wrong. The only think that you said is that the Democrats probably do this too, that isn't the same as saying that it's wrong.

ANd why would someone go the extra step of altering a statement then scanning it or sending it back to their phone? You can use a paper utility bill to register to vote, why not just alter it and then print it and take that in? My point is that there are laws in place to make this illegal and regardless of paper statements or allowing it to be shown on a phone it can already be faked but it's illegal.

I get most of my statements electronically also. Anyone can print a statement from email, alter it, and then resend it so it can be shown on the phone. Just having a statement on your phone doesn't prove anything.

You haven't said it's wrong, you have only said that the other party does it. I want to know if you think if the mailers that this article is talking about is alright or if the republicans were wrong for doing this. I have already said that if EITHER side does it it's wrong.

If I bring in a forged document for someone else's address (which speaking from experience with photoshop is extremely easy to do) is theirs? No, both are just as easy to forge and steal. However, the intent for allowing utility bills to be shown on a phone, is due to the fact that many people, myself included, don't receive statements in the mail anymore. Everything is done electronically. To get to my utility bills on my phone, I have to log into my account with my password and then I can bring up the bill. I get an email from WE telling me a bill is available, and then I log into see it. Lets say that they don't allow people to show electronic bills, I could get a bill, and put anyone's name and address on it. HOw is that any different?

HOw is changing a bill and uploading it to your phone any different that changing it, printing it and bringing it to the polling location and registering? It's just as easy. If you aren't willing to say that what the Republicans did was wrong, do you agree with the mailing? Do you believe that it was ok for them to send out mailers with information that is wrong about where to register to vote?

No one is better at confusing voters than the GAB. How many times have they published instructions on HOW to fill out voting registration, how to get registered if you have no identification, and how to show your legal residence by displaying it on your smart phone (even though it can be easily changed, and then uploaded to your phone).
If only the GAB put half as much effort into making sure the municipalities follow the law. Yet, many people choose to ignore that dirty little secret, but choose instead, to make sure some felons can fill absentee ballots.

Wislady, you seem to avoid the topic at hand. The republican party clearly sent out mailers to heavily democratic areas with false information to cause confusion and suppress votes. If the democrats are doing the same thing it's wrong either way. Let's try something new, we all know you are a republican no matter what. That doesn't mean that you aren't allowed to say that you disagree with something your party does. Same way that Packer fans are allowed to call out a player or coach for something they didn't agree with. I personally would be upset that my party did something this ridiculous that put a negative spot light on my party instead of defending it.

The Obama the world saw at the debate, is the real Obama. This was one of the very few times that he did not have the shield of the media or the press.
He is unable to speak intelligently, unless he has a teleprompter.
He needs to be held accountable for his failure in the debate, and his failure as president.
