Highway 59 near Milton closed until tomorrow morning
MILTON Highway 59 near Milton will be closed through Wednesday morning while officials work to clean up after an accident, according to a news release from the Wisconsin State Patrol.
At 9: 45 a.m. today, an ethanol tanker truck tipped over on one of the Highway 59 roundabouts. The accident caused thousands of gallons of ethanol to spill into a nearby retention pond. Officials closed Highway 59 and detoured traffic.
According to a news release from Milton police Lt. John Conger, state and local emergency crews determined it would be safer to let the ethanol continue to spill from the truck than to bring in equipment to stem the spill.
Traffic is being detoured around the site.
Westbound traffic on Highway 59 should take County KK north to County N, go west to Highway 26 and then south back to Highway 59.
Eastbound traffic should reverse those directions, taking Highway 26 north to County N, go east to County KK and south to Highway 59.

Because we have whiney truck drivers, that don't have a lot of skill handling their rigs. They have to slow down to 10 mph, poor babies. Most of them I see on the road are pretty good. But some of them are just awful.

If the Milton roundabouts so perfect, why are they going to get modified?

went past the spill area today; it smelled bad but it didn't look as if anything happened there...let's just hope the nice kettle lake on the other side of the road isn't affected...and btw-the roundabouts work fine...it's bad driving that causes accidents...

The only irresponsibility, HD, was on the part of the truck driver for not keeping the shiny side up.

Roundabouts have a larger turning radius than almost every single urban intersection. If a truck driver does not understand how to navigate a traffic feature found all over the world, they should surrender their commercial license.

So lets see here....this bypass was basically created to relieve truck traffic thru Milton...so they put small round a bouts in that a large car or pickup can barely turn thru, then wonder why big trucks have trouble getting thru them ??? (ask the snow plow drivers what they think of them)
Gee...go figure...totally irresponsible planning here...plain fact...

Yep, too many of these drivers drive like cowboys and are an accident looking for a place to happen.
.
As most ponds attract plenty of fowl and other wildlife, I wonder what steps, if any, are being taken to address that and any other environmental issues?

Saxcat - I couldn't agree more. I have heard truckers discussing roundabouts, and a lot of them don't realize the center portion doesn't have a curb so they can run their trailer wheels over them. I actually prefer them over lights & stop signs. I travel to Oregon frequently and the exit off hwy 14 is so much better than the old stop signs used to be.

Truckers have complained about The Milton Roundabouts being too small and making it difficult when turning.

Roundabouts don't flip semis. Irresponsible drivers flip semis.

Ha ha ha! You mean those wonderful, picturesque roundabouts that the State had to put in and the trucks can't make it around? Why did I guess that before even opening this page?
And what are there - five roundabouts in a row? Another pork barrel boondoggle brought to you by our wonderful WI DOT! They must have been a test piece before the DOT tried their hand at wasting millions and millions (and millions) on the bridges-to-nowhere Hwy 26 by-pass fiasco and sin-against-Nature land waste.
Fools...and very likely potential Janesville Sidewalk Committee members (or members of our "sss-steamed" city council!).

I'm not a big fan of local roundabouts because I know a lot of people here in Wisconsin don't know how to negotiate them well. I suspect the two groups that dislike them the most are drunk drivers and old people who should no longer be driving.

"tell me again why roundabouts are so wonderful? Oh, they have them in Europe.. yeah.. I hear things are going really well over there."
This right here is an attitude that will hold us down as a country for a long time. Roundabouts save lives. Lots of lives. But since they're used in Europe the fools here would rather scoff at the increased safety and keep seeing people die. This sort of ignorance is fatally dangerous.

whats with the crazy ways they want to detour traffic? I suppose to get it away from residential areas, which is sad because there are businesses, but I take High St, and go to where the old 59 was to get around the roundabouts during detours. I did on my way home today and that seems to be right where the cut off was.

I've seen trucks not be able to make the turns, and plows not be able to clear snow from these darn things.. tell me again why roundabouts are so wonderful? Oh, they have them in Europe.. yeah.. I hear things are going really well over there.

I'm only shocked that it was at the West roundabout. I've watched the way most of the trucks drive leaving the plant. They race down Count M like the east roundabout is a launchpad.
