JANESVILLE—It’s back to business as usual at the Janesville Mall after a gas leak outside of Sears forced an evacuation this morning, Janesville Fire Department Shift Cmdr. Scott Morovits said.

A contractor working in the north parking lot of the mall, 2500 Milton Ave., hit the 2-inch gas feed for Sears, resulting in a gas leak, Morovits said.

Authorities were dispatched at 9:07 a.m., and the building was evacuated to the south side.

Alliant Energy responded and shut off the gas supply, Morovits said. No gas was found inside the building, and Janesville fire crews cleared the scene after a half hour, he said.

Presumably the contractor was insured. Responsibility will rest on a lot of issues such as record-keeping or detection mistakes -- it isn't automatically the fault of the contractor. See how it's done here:

.
Fortunately open-air cuts like this are not as dangerous for the public compared with a long-term build-up of gas (which is probably what caused the Indianapolis explosion), but it's still a pretty dicey situation until the supply is turned off and the released gas dissipates.
.
Anyway, all is well, so it's time to remember that you can call 811 in Wisconsin to find out where stuff is buried.

user28, remember, they want you to buy their paper, for some crazy reason like being able to pay people.

The contractor might have called DHL and the pipe was incorrectly located. That will be the only scenario that will get them out of paying Alliant time and material to fix the damaged pipe. And if they were incorrectly marked by the locating contractor, they will pay. Either way, Alliant will not eat the cost to fix the pipe.

"No gas was found inside the building, and Janesville fire crews cleared the scene after a half hour"

Gee Frogger, Did you read the very first line? "Its back to business as usual", doesn't that imply that they let the people back in? Why should it be at the end when it was at the very beginning?

How about some pictures since the photographer is there. Not that the pictures would be that exciting but this is something the Gazette seems to lack on most of their stories. People like to see pictures. A gallery would be nice with the stories.
