Dane County dealing with bacterial infection
MADISON, Wis. (AP) — Dane County health officials are dealing with an outbreak of bacterial infection.
Eighteen cases of Shigellosis have been reported in the county since Sept. 20. That’s one fewer case than all of last year.
The bacterial infection is associated with consuming water or food contaminated with fecal matter. Most of the Dane County cases are in children and young adults. Only one person sickened has been older than 40.
The disease can cause fever, stomach cramps and diarrhea. The Wisconsin State Journal reports health officials are advising people to wash their hands and stay home if they are ill.

I've walked out of a few restaurants after observing the food handlers, but most people are uninformed on what to look for. I will say the county health inspectors in Rock County and Jefferson County that schooled me in food safety are the very best.

It could be just one careless food handler. Unfortunately there's not that much the average person can do to avoid this. Fortunately shigellosis is usually so mild people don't report it (or even recognize they have it). Most of the time "24-hour flu" is some type of food-borne illness.

Doc said that I had this a few years ago. Health dept.said that it most likely came from Kwik Trip. I, on the other hand, believe it came from an egg salad sandwich I purchased from the vending machine at work (i.e. the wheel of death). Horrid diarhea...so bad that I bled.

Most cases children and young adults? Sounds more like the source of contamination would be school cafeteria food!

And what might be the source? Perhaps one particular restaurant? A deli or produce department of any particular supermarket? I hope that there will be a follow-up story to this.
