Walker, Barrett to meet for first debate

By ASSOCIATED PRESS   Friday, May 25, 2012 - 9:05 a.m.

MADISON, Wis. (AP) — Gov. Scott Walker and Democratic Milwaukee Mayor Tom Barrett are scheduled to meet for the first of two live debates in advance of the June 5 recall election.

Friday's debate in Milwaukee is being broadcast live statewide at 8 p.m. Friday and sponsored by the Wisconsin Broadcasters Association.

Walker and Barrett will meet for a second and final debate Thursday night, also in Milwaukee.

Both candidates are familiar with one another, having run against each other in 2010. Walker's time as Milwaukee County executive also overlapped with Barrett's time as mayor from 2004 until 2010.

Recent polls have shown Walker with a narrow lead heading into the election, which has attracted national attention given the high profile fight over union rights that triggered the recall effort.

RichE95, it's so very disingenuous of you to only mention the left when you talk about that type of behavior. When all else fails, liberals turn to personal attack, name calling, filthy language etc. It reminds me of the way the UAW used to talk about GM managers. That worked out real well. We should grieve for the ordinary people who buy into the hate, greed, and bigotry of the left.

Hatred from the Dems on this site will not win the recall. Having 'tantrums' in public for over a year will not win this recall. Calling people 'stupid' for voting for tax relief while their lives and businesses suffer will not win this recall. Using union and government agencies in Madison to stop legislation will not win this recall.

The reason Walker has opened a lead in the polls? See the previous statements.

He shouldnt because there are more people in the state than the ones like you whom he seems to have bought. The funny thing is that taking away collective bargaining is just lazy government, not a financial tool. Its just him being afraid to negotiate. Open the books and say this is what we have, lets make a deal. Instead its force feeding people while giving away millions of tax dollars to big donors, freinds of donors, and political appointees. I find it so funny that people like you seem to always folllow the tea party montra of cut spending , and act as if Walker has or wants to cut anything. He will just cut one thing and give to another. There is plenty evidence of this crony Capitalism is all over you just jhave to look around. Maybe you should ask yourself why do we have to continue to bear the tax burden while 2/3 of business pays none? While Many in the govt continue to bribe and extort business with your valuable tax dollars. Your 1.2 billion in tax increases have kept this state afloat during very hard economic times, and yet that seems to go unnoticed. BTW did you see a substantial tax increase during that HUGE 1.2 billion tax hike? I didnt, not at all, so what got raised?

The tax increases include: $540 million paid from oil company profits; $318 million by creating a new 7.75% tax rate for the richest 1% of taxpayers; $290 million in higher taxes on cigarette smokers; $215 million in higher corporate income taxes; and more than $85 million paid on capital gains.

So enough with this 1.2 billion increase like we all paid for that in everyday income /property taxes, because that my friend is a myth.

Fear....Why shouldn't walker govern that way? These issues which you are so opposed to are what he based his campaign on and are exactly why the majority of us are going to get out and vote for him again. For walker to even consider an idea such as reinstating collective bargaining, would be going against everyone who supported him throughout this recall process.......enough with the rhetoric about dictators as well......you do remember the republicans and their constituents being completely shut out of the last budget process.......every one of them voted against the $1.2 billion in tax/fee increases.....where was the willingness of the democrats to work together in that situation? I'm fairly confident that walker will win this election--I hope he takes the victory as a mandate to continue with his reforms, as I agree with almost all of those introduced to this point....gotta go--have a lot going on tomorrow....good night!

Good to see vato copy and re-pasting a few "projections" of savings from 16 districts of the 443 districts in the state. DPI STATISTICS show that 82% of school districts will be having staff reductions this year.
916- please enough with the forward rhetoric. Wisconsin is clearly moving , forward would not be the direction I would use, but fine. The commercials are getting to you. Try to remember that of the 5 million people that live here , nearly HALF of us think that Scott Walker couldnt give a SH** about the people here and is concerned only with profitting and rewarding his freinds and donors only. Stop watching commercials and start looking around, Walker may have won the first election, he may very well win again, but his majority is and always has been razor thin. Shouldnt he govern that way? He governs like he has a 90% majority. Time to remember that there is a middle of the road solution to everything, this state and nation has been doing it that way since our inception. Scott Walker and many of his ilk seem to be acting like dictators, THAT is why there is a recall.

The scandal of the pension system in Milwaukee county (prior to Walker) cost them MILLIONS. Why don't you go back and look at some of that?

Walker was elected in special election to fill that position. (Ament "retired" to save his pension, and before he could be recalled). Ament even had the gall to think he could run for the position again in 2010, believing that because the City paid $45 Million to settle the malpractice claim...somehow it cleared him.
That whole mess caused 7 county supervisors to be RECALLED.

Maybe someone will ask Doyle about the no bid contracts he awarded to his campaign donors. I think two have now filed complaints against the city for that.

Or, how about the complaint filed against the chief prosecutor in the John Doe? Sounds like maybe there sound be a John Doe into the Office of Mayor in Milwaukee.

Shrek, according to the WMC, the establishment of a "manufacturers" state income tax credit is the first of its kind in 35 years. Also, if nothing has changed with the domestic production activities deduction in place since 2004, there would be no need to slip this legislation into the budget. Walker signed this windfall tax credit into law and it is not based on job creation. Do a little research and you will find the results enlightening. My links.

2) creation of draconian laws which restrict or do away with the civil rights of assembly, protest and of course seeking redress from government against laws which restrict rights

Killngrill - you missed the rest of the article. The part where the projections are based on not paying the bills today and ultimately costing the tax payers more down the road. Also, they decided not to include the shortfall in health programs. I do not believe it is appropriate to claim a surplus by not paying your bills...Here is a more accurate picture of those projections:

"Gov. Scott Walker's administration released improved budget projections Thursday that would leave the state with a $154.5 million surplus a year from now.

A large chunk of the surplus is realized by delaying payments that will ultimately cost taxpayers more in interest.

The budget numbers released Thursday do not account for a sizable shortfall in the state's health programs for the poor that Walker's administration says it will deal with through increased efficiencies and spending cuts."

"The new projection just released shows that at the end of the two year budget cycle enacted by Governor Walker, the state should be in the black by $154 million, instead of the $3.6 billion dollar hole left by Doyle and the Democratic controlled assembly, and the best part is that our taxes were not jacked up and our schools are in better shape then when we started this madness."

I know this comment does not follow the angry negative polarizing comments posted earlier. No matter who you intend to vote for I challenge you to watch and listen (both debates). Choose wisely, know the facts, do not base your decision by ads plastering our TV's. Let the debates confirm the decision you have already made or challenge you to get the answers you need before you make a decision. Democracy and Patriotism lives, God Bless Wisconsin.

In addition Good American, the jobs gained are reported to the Federal Government by law. It is a federal offense to submit fraudulent jobs data. I swear you far left wingers need to get out of the blogosphere and read some real news.

Walker moves forward by telling lies, that is all that has come out of his mouth since he took office. If, and that is a big if, he has told anything true, we can't believe him because of all the lies making us so skeptical.

I see by your far left hate speech that you are only one step across from mouse in your limited debating skills.

No Good American, we simple want our Government to be limited. We want the Federal Government to maintain a strong military and put the welfare programs back into states hands where budgets must be balanced.
Walker dominated in the 2010 debates which probably won him the election. He will again.
