Walker seeks ag disaster designation

MADISON, Wis. (AP) — Gov. Scott Walker has asked federal officials to declare an agricultural disaster in Wisconsin counties that suffered fruit and vine losses during this spring’s fluctuating temperatures.

Wisconsin saw a mix of unseasonably warm weather followed by cold and frosty conditions from March through May. The governor says fruit trees and vines flowered early but frost killed many of the buds and initial projections show losses could be as high as 80 percent. Actual losses will be determined later this fall.

Walker sent a letter to U.S. Department of Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack on Friday, asking him to issue a secretarial disaster declaration for all counties that suffered losses.

Forgot to mention -- Many trees will die. Especially those with shallow root systems.

Facts from a farmer:

Some corn is tasseling much too early and the ears have aborted. Soybean blossoms will start failing off. This is a widespread Midwest problem.

Without rain: Grocery prices will rise, ethanol production will slow or stop, equipment dealers/manufactures will not get orders, people will loose their jobs, and the ripples will hit many areas.

It costs up to $400 to plant one acre of corn. Know of one person who invested $1 million just to plant. At least at HoChunk it’s air conditioned while you loose all your money.

Actually rprp, I'm not certain, but I think farmers do have to apply for a loan through FEMA now that it's considered a disaster area.

Farmers should be treated like any other person that has had a weather related disaster. Let them apply to FEMA for a loan.

Thanks for the explanation.
So the schmuck asks the Fed and the farmers apply?
It still seems a little disingenuous for Walker to not take care of this
without help from the federal government, but not surprising.
As with most of the flag wavers out there, it is all show and no go.

gwen.. You really need to look into this process instead of spouting off like you do. The state applies to the federal govt to designate certain area of the state to qualify for agricultural relief funds. If they are approved THEN the farmers themselves apply to the federal govt for funds. The funds don't come to the state, they go to the farmer.

????? Republicans constantly argue for NO government or less government, but who do they go to when they have a need? GOVERNMENT !! then they take the aid to balance their county budget, as stated by analertcitizen. i understand farmers NEED assistance in these dire times, but will it only go to contributors of Governor Walkers, or will it go to ALL farmers, regardless of political contributions?. fruit farmers included. i am assuming aid will get to the farmers.

@spark- I hope farmers do get assistance if they need as I hope anyone needing it, gets it. My shock is that so many nasty, hateful comments were made by the Walker supporters about those on unemployment, those needing food stamps, and those receiving Badgercare. There talked about the awful auto industry
"bailouts" and still do. And yet, no problem with this!

analertcitizen - That is the problem. Thinking with emotion and not logic. Nobody is ever going to agree with everything a politician does. When something occurs that is for the better and makes sense, it's time to set your differences aside and move on.

@gary- Very warranted concerns too. Refer to the money sent from the Feds to assist foreclosures that Walker used to claim a balanced budget. He did the same thing while Milw. County Exec. Applied to the state for assistance for snow removal then claimed a " balanced budget" for the county. Same old story. People just don't know I guess and that's why 80% of Milw. didn't vote for himin the recall. They knew.

The Federal Disaster Relief is paid for by all of us in our federal taxes. Wisconsin Farmers are facing some tough times. Why would our Gov. not ask for Federal help?! You die hard Walker haters will crucify him no matter what. Our farmers, who are our neighbors and customers, need help. I think Walker should take the aid and find a way to repay it when times are better. We are not out of this drought, which started last winter, yet.

Sorry to all of you who can't wait to attack our elected Governor at any opportunity, but you really should stop posting for a while. If you could only see the way you look to many of us. Funny in a sad kinda way.

Farmers, I am praying for your rain and your suffering. Peace

Wasn't there an article a week or so ago about the soaring land values of farm owners? Not to mention the almost certain farm subsidies they receive every year. Walker can " bail out" people with large assets but resists helping those people who don't have as much. WHAT?

I talked to a big time Walworth County farmer yesterday - he farms thousands of acres. Forget about fruit and vines. He said if we do not get rain by Sunday - the show is over! The crops are not going to make it. Scott Walker will need to ask for more than fruits and vines and look at a bigger disaster facing our hard working farmers. Please Rain.

There are plenty of "private" crop sprinkler companies out there that would love to employee more people and build the farmers sprinklers. Instead the farmers want your money to help them through ther drought.

Yes because asking for agricultural disaster relief is something new to this country. No other state has ever asked for disaster relief. Just wait and see what happens if this drought continues. Some of you really need to get off your recall soapbox. It's over.
