Sidewalk committee likely to miss deadline
It appeared unlikely Thursday the sidewalk committee would meet a July 9 deadline imposed by the city council.
“If the council wants to shoot us, let them,” committee member Dave Hyde said with a smile. “They can start over again with a new group.”
The Janesville Sidewalk Task Force Committee is charged with making recommendations on the city’s contentious, seven-year sidewalk plan. The plan was halted when residents on the 2012 program organized politically and elected two new council members who suggested a task force be formed.

So if I am reading this short article correctly. A committee was formed to evaluate and give recommendations on sidewalks for the city.
This committee was given a date when they were to be done with the recommendations
The committee must have agreed with the date because they did not come back and tell the city they needed more time
NOW they are not done and are saying screw it, just shoot us and start over with someone new if you want
Is it just me or does anyone else see something wrong with this?
It sounds like Mr. Hyde is on a bit of a power trip, as in “we did not do our job so screw it”.
I think this is part of what is wrong with the country, you are given a task, you agree to the task, and then you say screw it and don’t bother to complete that task.

This is a joke how long will this go on??
Glad we don't need a rocket scientist.

I think this just proves that this decision isn't as easy as those who complained thought. There are always many sides to every decision, which is why we elect a council to evaluate and make decisions. Some of us will like them, some of us won't--human nature.

If you can get out of what you've known you've had to do for 7 years just by complaining a lot, then I'm ripping my sidewalks out. No more shoveling. No more maintenance on them. More yard for my dog. I'm not near a school, a bus route, etc. and my neighbors across the street aren't required to have them. So I guess the city is saying I don't need to either. Neato.

I doubt that the council will shoot them, since most (at least it seems that way) of its members seem to be on the committee.

tom3205, your logic is redundant. If there is no NEED for sidewalks, does that mean property owners that have been footing the repair bills, and or maintaining (shoveling snow), etc... can barricade the sidewalks? Does that mean sidewalk adjacent to their property can be taken out instead of repairing them and grow grass or flower bed instead? Does that mean those without sidewalks will pay a share for other property owners who do have sidewalks? Granted, maybe not much accidents have happened and studies have not been done because perhaps it's just common sense in the upbringing of civilization? PLEASE do the homework.

In 1900 sidewalks were necessary because of mud, horse droppings, etc. People tracked this mess into the stores, and their homes. Those conditions do not exist today. Therefore there is no NEED for sidewalks. Sure, some people think they promote safety, but there are no surveys to prove this. What exactly is the frequency and severity of accidents, if any ??? Logic tells us it's safer to walk on a sidewalk then in the road. BUT is it?? Just how many accidents have occurred where there were sidewalks, vs were there were none. No one knows because they have not studied these facts. PLEASE do the homework.
