MADISON, Wis. (AP) — Unemployment rates crept up in most major Wisconsin cities last month, while most counties saw unemployment drop.

The Wisconsin Department of Workforce Development released the latest local unemployment figures for May on Wednesday.

The report shows that 11 cities saw rates drop or have no change between April and May while 21 saw an increase. However, none of those rose more than roughly one half of a percentage point.

Of the state’s 72 counties, unemployment rates declined in 36, stayed the same in six and went up in 30.

Beloit had the highest unemployment rate at 11.6 percent followed by Racine at 11.2 percent.

Milwaukee’s was third highest at 10.2 percent.

Statewide unemployment for the month was 6.8 percent.

It's the people that "believe" that on person, either Obama or Walker, or whomever, has any real impact on job creation is what is wrong with these discussions. Corporate profits are generally at pre-2007 levels, Wall Street is back up to the same levels, yet there is a huge disconnect between the "job creators" and actual jobs being created. Why is that? It because corporate tax rates, tax breaks and greasing the wheels of industry do no create jobs, they may help to retain them, but they do not create them. Jobs are created between the interplay of demand and another's capability to fulfill that demand. Without the demand, you have nothing. That's where we are right now, and all the right wing teeth gnashing that regulation and taxes are what are keeping the "job creators" from creating jobs falls flat in the face of reality.
------
Your spending is your neighbors income. If you stop spending, your neighbors income declines, or his/her job is gone. Same goes for you.
-----
The endgame for business is not to create jobs, but make profit, and if jobs are created along the way, great. If they can automate the entire process with robots that can build themselves, you're out of luck.

If unemployment was way down, would all the right-wingers on this site still be saying "I don't believe the unemployment numbers?"

tamrlu - "He gave and gave to the public unions"
Thompson "gave" nothing to those public employee unions, he only signed the contracts, your state legislators voted to approve them.
And if those contracts were so bad, why did he sign them?
Funny how Thompson used to be the best thing since sliced bread, the Wisconsin Repub's hero, now you want to throw him under the bus.

Thompson actually left the state in the "hole." He gave and gave to the public unions. The deficit left by Doyle was the same or a tad less than what Thompson left us with. Cigarette settlement ring any bells? History is there to look at.

how is this Obama's fault, 916? With less gov't spending than any president in the last 60+ years? Our economy is FAR better off now than we were when GW left office.
has Scooter really done enough to make our state a better place to live? no, not really; just look at the way he slashed environmental protections of shorelines and wetlands...and is the DWD keeping track of those whose benefits ran out and are still unemployed? I'd bet not...

"Maybe because it isn't working."
Did you ever consider the fact that it needs time to work? You gotta love the hypocrisy of the left. Obama has almost completed his term, the economy is still an absolute mess, and we're still hearing about the problems he "inherited". On the flip side, Walker, without even completing half his term, was being vilified by these same people for Wisconsin's job creation numbers. They just seemed to completely forget about the mess that Diamond Jimmy and the democrats left the state in......It really is funny though--the anti-Walker gang are so predictable!:)

Unemployment rates have been a twisted statistic for many years. Too many variables. The real pulse of the economy is foreclosures by bank default and tax default. car sales to some degree as well.

The unemployment rate is based on a survey of people who say they are actively seeking work it has nothing to do with unemployment insurance! Why is it every time a story about the unemployment rate is on here someone has to say it about who is collecting benefits when it isnt.

"Statewide unemployment for the month was 6.8 percent."

I don't see any mention of the prior month's statewide unemployment rate in the in the DWD news release narrative [ http://dwd.wisconsin.gov/dwd/newsrelease... ]. You need to drill down into the data tables to find it. It was 6.7%.

For the sake of those unemployed, I am very sorry to see this news. More competition for jobs will not help. However, you are also seeing the effects of thousands of public employees (school employees) who were laid off due to budget cuts caused by Act 10. So a few tax dollars were saved, but now we're paying the price. Hate to say "I told you so"...but....

i never believe the facts about unemployment, one key reason being they count a job gained when a persons unemployment ends, even though they have not gotten a job
