Kraft to close Waupaca cheese plant
WAUPACA, Wis. (AP) — Kraft Foods Inc. plans to close a cheese plant in Waupaca and lay off 120 employees in a cost-cutting move.
The closing is planned for the second quarter of 2013. Workers were told Tuesday of the closing.
The factory was built in 1954 and acquired by Kraft in 1987 for production of specialty spreads and cheeses under the Athenos, Kraft and Hoffman’s brands.
Kraft spokeswoman Joyce Hodel tells The Post-Crescent (http://post.cr/MAAxTu ) the Waupaca plant doesn’t have enough volume to support the plant’s overhead costs.
Hodel says the 84,000-square-foot Waupaca plant is one of the company’s smaller facilities. She says Kraft plans to create more than 20 new jobs at its Wausau plant, and Waupaca employees will get preference for those jobs.
The Kraft Wausau plant currently has 200 employees.

The unemployment numbers are NOT based solely on who is or is not receiving benefits. The numbers are based on statistical surveys of homes and businesses. If unemployment were based solely on unemployment insurance participation, the self employed would never be counted.

I know, we've seen the master spinner Obama as his real numbers figure to be more then 14%. So much pain out their, no wonder his poll numbers are so low, we all feel it.
He should be thanking his lucky stars for the 2010 elections that put over 700 state Reps and 29 Governors in place. We could be looking at 50 Illinois or Californias that the nations numbers would be jaw droppingly devastating.
Wisconsin was 4th worst just above IL, CA, and NJ. Walker took us to 17th despite the liberal turmoil.

Kaysbrew how are the unemployment numbers figured? They are figured by the number of claims filed. With alot of people relcating to different states for new jobs and the number of people having their claims run out of course the percentage will be lower, that however does not mean more people are working. You can spin the numbers anyway you like it.

Unemployment numbers reflect who is claiming unemployment benefits. People who no longer are eligible, but still have not found work, are not included in the count. In WI, that number is quite large. Then we have "underemployment" issues -- folks with skills and education that should equal higher earnings, but only unskilled, low-paying jobs are available.

T - did I not say Walker is unable to save all the jobs? If a company wants to consolidate, it's that companies choice.
How can you compare 100 jobs to 157,000? You don't think Obama had anything to do with that under Doyle's administration either.
Only stimulus saves some of those giving money to Government union jobs or that 157,000 would have been much much worse. Because that was the Democrats solution to the budget. Lay off thousands of Teachers, etc.
Walker and other GOP Governors voted in since Obama are doing all they can to combat Obamanomics.

Interesting that a few of the righties are finally realizing that DEMAND effects the employment level more than taxes on the rich do. Of course, to them, this only applies to Wisconsin (Walker), and not the nation (Obama).

Sheboygan Piggly Wiggly closing doors now because of union labor demands. Unions are greeding themselves out of relevance.
Palermo pizza being told by unions illegal aliens should work for them. NLRB-illegal is a word that means NOT LEGAL.
Unions are giving themselves a very bad name with the fees and dues the want by any means necessary even if it shuts down businesses or lays of teachers.
This policy widely rejected in 60 counties in Wisconsin alone.

As far as boycotting, I have gotten lists of items to boycott, but it was not because they were made in WI. It was because of who owned them and used their profits to destroy WI middle class. Tell the truth - not half-truths.

Really, kay?? I try to buy local products. I never go to WalMart because I remember (30 years ago?) when they first opened in our hometown in NC. So proud that they only sold American made items. . . over time they pressured many American companies into closing and switched to less expensive products made in other countries (think underpaid, unsafe working conditions). They have been trying to redeem their reputation with advertising, but basically, it is all about profits -- not their employees, their community, or this country. However, I still have a job. I may have to eat my words one day when I am unemployed. . . .

What happened to the liberals? Are they promoting people losing their jobs? Welcome to Obamanomics.
Obama's lucky we put so many Governors like Walker in office in 2010 or this would be happening at a much more accelerated rate with many businesses.
I'm surprised this little plant closing didn't happen sooner the way they've been boycotting all good things made in Wisconsin the past 16 months.

The comments as to where people shop is so off base as anywhere is USA IMO is supporting your local economy. Buying on line is where the States and Country are losing. It is causing so many small businesses and larger ones to fall. For you who net shop for value JUST REMEMBER where the company and site are really located.. If you blame Gov Walker for Kraft's failure on left, it's a point once again that Government should neither help or hurt businesses but allow them to raise or fall on their own merit.
I'd rather see Kraft make the capitalist decision to close a very small plant and redirect employees then to have my government give them billions of dollars as in Solyndra then have them go bankrupt. That I've learned is crony capitalism and the Democrats seem to be picking winners and losers with our money.

Actually the real version of the story is that Kraft (KFT) is spliting into two separate parts. The domestic business which is slow growing--- think Cheese, mac n' cheese, and other kraft brands that are sold in the USA only. Being that the US is a "mature" market is it hard these brands to grow and gain market share. The second half of kraft is the international business and packaged snack food business. This segment is higher growth and adding production to fulfill demand. Its too bad that preferences have changed that americans are buying more packaged snack foods (fat people food) than they are items that are much better for your such as cheese. That is why the plant is closing. Also helpful to know is that if your are a Kraft shareholder, in about 2 months the company will break up and you will be given 2 different shares of stock. (one that is kraft international with a low dividend yield and higher growth and one that is Kraft domestic with a large dividend yield to reflect the maturity of the business.
