JANESVILLE--About 40 more parking stalls were scheduled to be closed Tuesday morning on the downtown parking plaza, bringing to 90 the number of stalls closed out of the plaza’s total of 246.

About 50 stalls were closed in early July after a consultant, Bloom Companies, found possible structural problems.

Bloom has since evaluated the understructure of the entire deck and recommended the restricted parking area be expanded until repairs are completed, according to a city news release.

Repair cost is estimated at about $136,000, said Carl Weber, director of public works.

While most of the girders that support the concrete parking deck are in satisfactory condition, girders in 10 locations are seriously deteriorated and require repair.

If they remove it, they need to seriously have a plan to expand parking elsewhere NEARBY and FAST. I'm not sure Janesville is that great at planning ahead. A lot of ostriches tend to run the city.

Save our parking plaza! Maybe we can get KAB to erect a shrine, or stage a protest, or organize a candlelight vigil to preserve this valuable piece of history?

Since when does a parking ramp have historical value? If the city is going to fix it it should be paid for by the business downtown.

The parking is always 50 to 70 percent full when I go to the gym. I say fix it. Its been a part of Janesville for as long as I can remember, how about historical value.

This is the parking plaza over the river, not the garage that was opened a few years ago.

wasn't this just built a few years ago? Shoddy construction or bad engineering or what?

From gazette 2/26: "Now, however, the state Department of Natural Resources is forcing the issue. It's told the city that it can do minimal maintenance on the deck, but it can't do anything to extend its life."
