EAU CLAIRE--A Missouri man was arrested Sunday morning after eluding Eau Claire police officers by jumping into the Chippewa River.

Police say the 30-year-old was a suspect in an attempted burglary at about 10:30 a.m. at a downtown business.

Once in the river the man began swimming toward the Lake Street bridge. After the man refused to come out of the river, fire and rescue teams positioned themselves on the Lake and Water street bridges to provide life jackets and safety ropes.

The suspect declined help and continued to swim, but eventually tired and was caught on the bank near the UW-Eau Claire campus.
