10 hospitalized after possible carbon monoxide incident
LA CROSSE--Ten employees were hospitalized Thursday after suffering what is likely exposure to carbon monoxide fumes at Chippewa Bi-Products near Alma Center, officials said.
The group was taken to Black River Memorial Hospital about 10 a.m. after at least one passed out, according to Jackson County Emergency Management Director John Ross. Their conditions were not available Thursday, but they are expected to recover, Ross said.
Officials ventilated the building and the cause of the fumes is being investigated. There were propane-powered forklifts and a wood-fueled furnace in the building.
Ross said the incident serves as a reminder to install carbon-monoxide detectors in workplaces and homes.
