Three snowmobilers rescued from Lake Koshkonong
FULTON TOWNSHIP—Three snowmobiles broke through the ice just before 7 p.m. Thursday on Lake Koshkonong leaving their drivers stranded on the ice.
The operators were Kody J. Hubred, 22, Cambridge; Brett S. Nastala, 19, Milton; and Justin Hackett, 20, Edgerton, according to a Rock County Sheriff’s Office news release.
Hubred and Nastala were taken to Edgerton Hospital for treatment of exposure to the cold water.
Nastala was treated and released. Hubred was admitted for observation. Hackett refused medical treatment and was released from the scene, the release said.
Deputies from the sheriff’s office plus crews from Fulton Township Police Department, the Edgerton and Milton Fire Departments responded to the scene at 6:52 p.m., according to the release.
Fire crews were able to get two of the three men to the shoreline in the area of High Wood Beach, while members of the Rock County Sheriff’s Office Recreational Safety Team picked up the third subject and transported him to safety, the news release said.
The initial investigation revealed that a large group of snowmobiles were operating on the ice of the lake about 150 yards off the shoreline when three snowmobiles leading the pack broke through thin ice and entered the water.
The remaining snowmobiles were able to turn around and safely get to the shoreline where they called for assistance.
The incident remains under investigation, but alcohol has been determined to not be a contributing factor.
