Tea party leaders upset with recall decision
Leaders of two tea party groups said a decision Tuesday by Wisconsin's elections board not to accept third-party evidence of fraud in recall petitions targeting Republican Gov. Scott Walker has put the integrity of the election in jeopardy.
The attorney for recall organizers called the tea party request ridiculous. If the groups find any serious problems, they can make them publically available for Walker to bring to the Government Accountability Board's attention before it determines whether to order a recall election, Democratic attorney Jeremy Levinson said.
The board agreed with the recommendation by GAB director Kevin Kennedy not to allow outside groups to intervene in the process. The board is currently reviewing an estimated 1.9 million signatures on petitions seeking the recall of Walker and five other Republicans.
The recalls were largely fueled by anger at a law proposed by Walker and passed by the Republican-led Legislature that severely limited the collective bargaining rights of public workers.
Its review is focused on making sure the required information was entered with the signature and the date is within the allowable time period. The board is also seeking to identify duplicates and obviously fake names.
Ross Brown, president of the tea party group We the People of the Republic, said the elections board wasn't doing enough to weed out fraud, and that "clean and honest elections" are at stake.
"We are finding abnormalities, we are finding duplicates," said Larry Gamble, spokesman for the Wisconsin GrandSons of Liberty, the other tea party group. The two groups had enlisted more than 13,000 volunteers, including at least one person from all 50 states, to help build a database to review the signatures, he said.
It takes 540,208 valid signatures to order a recall election against Walker. Organizers said they turned in more than 1 million signatures, a number they say makes an election inevitable.
But Walker and other recall opponents have called for a thorough analysis of the signatures to weed out duplicates and others that shouldn't be accepted, including from people not living in Wisconsin or whose names were forged.
The five retired judges who comprise the GAB agreed with staff's determination that outside groups can't bring challenges to the board. The law only allows for the board to consider rejecting signatures based on evidence brought forward by its staff or the targeted office holders, Kennedy said. Petition circulators are allowed to defend against those challenges.
Just as the court system doesn't allow people to walk off the street and present evidence, the GAB shouldn't change its established process for reviewing and challenging petition signatures either, Kennedy said.
"We're not pursuing an agenda one way or another," said Judge David Deininger, chairman of the board. "We're simply trying to follow the statute and have the process be as true to the language of the constitution and statutes require."
While the GAB won't be accepting the findings of the tea party groups, the groups will be posting their results online. Both Kennedy and Jeremy Levinson, the attorney for the recall groups, said Walker's campaign could then access that information to make its challenges.
"That information can be put in place if it's real and they have it," Levinson said. He called the tea party groups' requests to have a formal role in the GAB verification process "a bit of theater."
About 460,000 signatures would have to be disqualified in order for the Walker recall election not to proceed.
The Republican Party is working in conjunction with the Walker campaign to do its own separate review of the petitions, which also involves constructing a database.
The four targeted state senators — Van Wanggaard of Racine, Terry Moulton of Chippewa Falls, Scott Fitzgerald of Juneau and Pam Galloway of Wausau — have until Thursday to file signature challenges. Walker's challenges are due Feb. 27 and Lt. Gov. Rebecca Kleefisch has until March 5.
The GAB has until March 19 to verify all of the recall petitions but could seek an extension from a judge. The board has already been granted a 30-day extension for the work of verifying the estimated 1.9 million signatures.

Midnight--You're kidding, right? The reason they are opting out is because walker has stripped them of the right to bargain collectively. If they cannot bargain, they cannot be effective. Please don't say, "But they can still bargain for pay," because they cannot. If there is no quid pro quo, there is no bargaining. If you take away all other bargaining chips, and leave only one, there is no bargaining. After all, what can they offer in exchange for a raise in pay? In the past, the union could say, "We will give back one vacation day per year in exchange for a higher pay rate," or something like that. But those things are all gone now, so what walker calls bargaining for pay goes like this: "Can we get a raise in pay?" "No." End of "bargaining. You have to have something to offer in exchange in order to bargain, and those things have all been stripped away. So what good can the unions do for members now? THAT'S why the teachers are opting out, not because they have converted to the Nazi way of thinking.

One reason way Walker will not be recalled is that Teachers are opting out of Unions. Don't need them. Walker will win, not because of money, but because the Teachers are seeing the light.

KAY BREWSKI - I can answer the question - Walker is WRONG! Any man that must continually tell the public that he is a man of integrity, a Boy Scout, son of a minister, etc knows he can only fool a few people as governor. Walker has continually surrounded himself with many that break the law and now are finally starting to get caught. There is a lot more in the JOHN DOE investigation that will be in the news. Many that have supported Walker are also finding it hard to believe him. It was comical to see Walker tell us in his State of the State speech that he is turning things around and the very next day 2 more Walker staffers are charged with multiple felony and misdemeanor charges.

Problem would be you let outside groups in this they would challenge signatures till the cows came home and the GAB’s work would never get done till the next election is done. You all want this recall to happen right. Here is what to do let the GAB alone to do their work or this recall will never happen and will waste the money for this recall for nothing.

I have reviewed HUNDREDS of pages and have found some signatures that I would consider not allowable, about 40 by my count. I started at the beginning and am getting close to 500 pages reviewed. Now I am a supporter of the recall and have found about a signature or two here or there that was just so poorly done that I just discounted them because it looked like someone was trying to make a mockery of the process. Now do you think that the signatures of that nature are coming from WEAC, or from the Walker supporters??
Your repeated blathering about WEAC and 2 to 3 per page blah blah blah is funny. I would be interested in any and all problems you have found , real ones not rhetorical. Please post the page numbers, I would go right to them!! Maybe instead you should post the links to the pdfs so anyone can go to them and look and not listen to this ridiculous blubbering on your part.

The GAB decision is a panicked reaction to distract from the fact that most of the signatures collected are unusable. WEAC is facing an humiliating defeat of the Walker recall effort because the most strident supporters of teachers unions lack the basic skill of filling in a legal form with their name and address. Forget about the documented fraudulent signatures that forced the creation of Verify the Recall. As a VTR volunteer, I have found that at most 2-3 of the signatures on each petition are even usable. GAB's proposed optical character recognition software will have even worse results than what VTR volunteers are able to accomplish. WEAC is so focused on pushing their feel-good liberal social agenda that basic skills, like writing as a MEANS OF COMMUNICATION to other people, have fallen by the wayside. Signatures are illegible scrawls or do not match the printed name; signatures are used in place of printed names; addresses are missing names of municipalities and/or zip codes; municipalities and streets are misspelled, and various loops are indistinguishable as to whether they are the letters a, b, d, e, i, o, l, or t. While it is permissible for another person to fill out all but the signature portion, if you let your child fill out the printed name, make sure that it is spelled correctly!
