JANESVILLE – Parents and students from Franklin Middle School and Rock River Charter School are invited to give their opinions about moving the charter school to Franklin.

“The School District of Janesville will hold a focus group meeting to explore the possibility of moving Rock River Charter School into a wing of Franklin Middle School to save costs and to better utilize space and resources,” according to a news release the school district issued Monday.

The meeting is scheduled for 6-7 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 9, at Franklin, 450 N. Crosby Ave. The event will start with a short tour of the area proposed to be the charter school’s new home.

Would I rather they drop out, are they not the ones who had to be removed from the regular school due to issues. Let their parents foot the bill if they want their child to get an education. We have many private schools they can go to. We remove them for one school for issues, yeah lets put them all in one school and see how multiple misfits do in the school with children who are actually there to learn. Sounds great school district???

I believe all elementary schools have at least 300 students. If you close one where are they all going to go? If it is Jefferson, as Capricorn suggests, the closest choices are Adams, Kennedy and Monroe. None of them have the room for an average of 100 students each. It has been shown, even with some decline in enrollment, that the elementary schools do not warrant a closing.

I think spinitright is on the right track. However, when an elementary is closed it should be Jefferson. One wing could house Rock River Charter School and the other the district offices. The current district site could be sold to the city for the new firehouse. The school district would gain more money and current buildings would be used more efficiently.

I am not a fan of the charter schools. While I'm sure there are many success stories that come from them, it is just a weakening of society that requires them. Instead of saying...follow society or you're out, they say, follow society, or we'll change the rules so you feel like you fit in. Those of us who work in the real world know that is not how things normally work.

If the school district was serious about reducing costs and more efficiently using it's resources it would have closed an elementary school and moved the charter school to that free space.

This does not seem like a good idea. I realize there are different reasons why kids attend charter school but putting these older kids into the same building with the younger kids is not a good idea.

I think this defeats the purpose of the charter school...to remove kids from the "regular" school situation...
