AFSCME: Video attacking Barrett was a mistake
MADISON, Wis. (AP) — Wisconsin’s largest public employees union said it used poor judgment when it directed members to an Internet video attacking Democratic gubernatorial candidate Tom Barrett, and acknowledged the video was “over the top.”
Yet, in a statement on its website, the Wisconsin chapter of the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees stood by its criticism of Barrett, claiming that he demanded too many concessions from workers as Milwaukee’s mayor.
“While we used poor judgment in directing our members’ attention to an Internet video that went over the top to make its point, we believe it is essential to bring attention to Barrett’s record on collective bargaining,” the statement said. “Unfortunately, it is not a good record.”
The video that AFSCME sent to its members last week incorrectly implies that Barrett supported Republican Gov. Scott Walker’s plan effectively ending collective bargaining rights for public workers. The change spurred a recall drive against Walker, and Barrett is one of four Democrats vying to unseat him.
The union did not produce the video, but last week AFSCME Council 24 executive director Marty Beil said it fit with the union’s criticism of Barrett. Beil did not return phone or email messages seeking comment Sunday.
The statement, posted on the union’s website Saturday, implies that union members had voiced concerns about AFSCME’s criticism of Barrett. The statement thanks members for sharing their concerns, saying: “We understand you feel we should speak no ill of any Democratic contender.” However, it goes on to say campaigns are about drawing distinctions between candidates, even those in the same party.

Really SB1? You can't tell me which Madison station or the ad you claim is incorrect. I, on the other hand have provided numerous sources.
SB1, I can't even say your are wrong because you haven't provided anything more then a couple of words strung together.
Facts trump words.

Just weeks ago, Milwaukee Mayor Tom Barrett was patting himself on the back for balancing that city’s budget without raising taxes. How did he do that?
He did it by utilizing the reforms created by Gov. Scott Walker’s budget-reform bill.

One more for you SB1
It's on the record, in the books. They only dispute at this time is just HOW MUCH savings Barrett and Milwaukee gained under ACT 10.

some fun facts - the WEAC survey taken from 2002 - 2011 results they tried to hide after releasing 11/2011 survey because it shows just how GREAT Act 10 is for students and school districts.
Jim Doyle/Democrats vs. Walker and Act 10
Increase in student fees 75% Doyle only 22% Walker....Deduction is sports and activities 50% Doyle only 11% Walker....Teacher Layoffs 70% Doyle only 31% Walker - and that 31% would surely be lower if some districts like Janesville didn't rush to sign with the blue fisters before ACT10. And Walker has only had one year with ACT10. Imagine how wonderful this will be in 4 years. One year school saving so far $916,866,322.00. It is about the kids. Thank you Republicans, for this you are getting recalled.

SB1: Highlights from story that are fact
Republicans did eventually follow Barrett’s advice and pass the collective bargaining changes without the Democrats.
As a result of the changes brought by Act 10, the city of Milwaukee was able to save $19 million in health care costs. This is because the city no longer had to collectively bargain over benefits issues.
If Act 10 had not passed, the city was facing an $8 million increase in health care costs. The net savings to the city budget of the Act 10 budget reform, subtracting the cuts in local aid, was $11 million for 2012.
One area where the legislature did not listen to Barrett was the inclusion of police and firefighters in the changes to collective bargaining. Barrett was disappointed that Wisconsin did not include police and firefighters in the collective bargaining changes.
.......In a letter sent by Barrett to legislative leaders prior to Act 10’s passage,
“The City will be forced to continue to pay the entire employee contribution for police and fire pensions, missing out on savings of approximately $14.4 million annually. This is compared to the pension savings from other unions and general city employees that will only total $8.3 million annually.”
In addition to the unrealized pension savings, changes to police and fire health benefits could have resulted in $3.2 million more in savings.
Perhaps that’s why Barrett chastised Walker and the legislature, reminding them that New Jersey and Ohio included police and fire in the collective bargaining changes.

Please note that none of these came from Fox News – the GOP echo chamber.
Also, as North Korea has been in the news lately, I have been thinking about how distorted their views are of the rest of the world, how they got that way and why they stay that way. A keep factor in that distortion is that they limit where/what news they listen to (in their case they are forced to do so) then readily receive what they are told to think – the right-wing Fox News model perhaps?
Watch for the objections to this comment – supports my point :)

They are more worried because the republicans will be voting for Falk in the primary, eliminating Barrett, leaving them with a candidate who will be the weakest against Walker.

AFSCME is backpedalling now because they know they will have little choice but to support Barrett after he beats Falk in the primary.

" the upper management will do whatever they want. You won't be able to say anything. 60 hour work weeks, no bathroom or lunch breaks, unsafe/dirty working conditions, no seniority, no insurance/retirement plans, no vacation time, minimum wages."-babaloo1
Do you REALLY believe that? So "upper management" will defy all OSHA and DOL rules and regulations? They will treat their workers like dogs until they quit or die and then bring in the next slave?
Do you realize that the vast majority of companies and "upper management" consider their workers the most important asset they have? No company I have ever worked for has had a problem paying a fair wage for a competent employee. All offer vacation, pay overtime (and have never demanded 60 hour weeks, except for the "upper management"), give bathroom breaks offer 401(k), short term and long term disability, and out safety of the workers as the number one priority.
I really would like to know what companies you think would treat their employees like this, but first would like you to admit if you really believe this or are just spouting something you heard.

@babaloo.. I'm old enough to remember the UAW - the office based out of Lincolnshire, IL, the same one that funded the crap in Madison. I remember we had some of the first dental insurance ever. The insurance through the UAW no doubt saved my mother's life when she was diagnosed with leukemia. I remember that same insurance was denied to my dad when he retired, despite a long and bitter strike to get it..No one is saying unions didn't do a lot to make the life of the working stiff better. But no one is better off when their basic civil rights are taken away, and as soon as you force someone to join a union in order to work, you have violated their right of free association. From the Communist party goals as read into the congressional record, 1963 - goal number 36. Infiltrate and gain control of MORE unions. The emphasis on the word MORE is mine.. because it clearly shows that even in 1963, the Communist party of the USA at least THOUGHT they had control of at least one union.

A lot of people are too young to remember what kind of working conditions our grandparents had to tolerate before there were unions. We are beginning to see those conditions come back because of the lack of this knowledge. When employees lose any right to decisions made in the work place, the upper management will do whatever they want. You won't be able to say anything. 60 hour work weeks, no bathroom or lunch breaks, unsafe/dirty working conditions, no seniority, no insurance/retirement plans, no vacation time, minimum wages. I'll be the first to agree that some of the unions-especially the auto unions-have gotten over the top in their contract demands. Other unions were mainly protecting basic human rights. If you ever knew anyone that stood in a cold picket line for hours, shake their hands and thank them. Your workplace is what it is today because of them.

Ah! Liberal cannibalism at its finest. The message today is: Don't vote for this guy because he's not union enough. Kinda like Herman Cain not being black enough to garner the black vote. What are the dems going to do if they lose this recall? Personally, I believe that Walker will win - again. But if he doesn't how will the dems get collective bargining back? Also, why should they get it back? If they have the ability (votes in the assembly, senate and gov office) why give back everything that was lost? Why not give a little here, and a little there? Stretch out their ability to provide over the next 50-60 years for you (collective bargaining) in order to keep control over you. Dangle the carrot for as long as possible. If they give it all back now, why would a collective bargaining proponent vote for them in the future? Mind you, when I write collective bargaining proponent, I don't mean those who are lock step with the Democratic party dogma, but rather those who are on the fence, or leaning to the right of center.

If AFSCME keeps this up they are going to lose the recall election. To come out and publicly say essentially "We don't like Barrett because he asked for concessions" is just idiotic. They still don't get it, concessions were needed, ending collective bargaining was over the top. That should be the message plain and simple. Anything else is just going to piss off independent voters and they are going to say at home on recall day.

"...UNIONS that want taxpayers to fund their Cadillac medical insurance plans and very generous retirement benefits when the rest of us are lucky to the have the proverbial pot to ..." -che@10:40pm
The truth comes out. You can't get a decent job for yourself with decent benefits so you think others should be brought down to your level. I've known this is the case, it is just good, (in a pitiful sort of way) to see you admit it. This is sort of the antithesis of capitalism, that you pretend to be a proponent of. Sad, very sad indeed.

I hadn't stop to think just how funny this recall season is going to be from my Republican point of view (I still think it's a colossal waste of our tax dollars) Even if our elected Governor, Governor Walker gets fewer votes this time around, he may still win by a wider margin with all of the infighting the Union Democrats will be doing, being unable to agree on who they think has their best interests in mind "cough cough, MONEY" (never mind if they are even qualified or not, never mind if they are going to undo all of Governor Walkers budget savings he has made, which by the way Channel 3 reported last week it has already saved over $900,000,000, it's going to be all about who is going to give them the most $$$)because as we all know Unions think that the public as a whole is suppose to support the minority population of the state of Wisconsin, no matter what!
Since this all began I think I may have worried for a minute before I realized that this is going to be funny and when the smoke settles after the recall election, Governor Walker will still be in the Capital working to make Wisconsin a better state to work, do business and live in and living at 99 Cambridge Road in the Village of Maple Bluff, Wisconsin at the Governors Mansion.
I support Governor Walker, but boy I can't wait until this thing gets to full speed, and the hate will begin being flung in every direction, just for the chance to lose to Walker once again!

This union and all other unions will never admit to their mistakes of beating up the non-union workers. Remember and keep in mind, they only believe in collective rights, not individual rights. As a disclosure, I am in a union, and I never have supported their fight for anything.
