Janesville City Council president resigns
JANESVILLE -- George Brunner, the president of the Janesville City Council and former Janesville police chief, announced Wednesday afternoon that he is resigning from his council post.
Brunner was arrested Friday at his home on charges of disorderly conduct and resisting an officer. Brunner issued the following statement:
"After careful consideration I have decided to resign from the Janesville City Council. The incident that took place at my home was a private family matter and unfortunately played out publicly. I must accept responsibility for my actions. I apologize to child protective services, the police department, the community, the city council, and family for what occurred involving my actions and response to the situation. My actions that evening were in response to an emotional, personal, family situation that I believe should remain a personal and family matter. I only hope and pray that others do not have to experience similar family situations and ask that people not judge others when not knowing the history, circumstances, or the facts. This decision has weighed heavily on my shoulders for the past several days. Whatever I have done in the past does not matter as one is judged only on what they did last. It is time to focus on my family.
"Note: I will have no further comment.
"George D. Brunner

"Battery Against a Police Officer
Any crime committed against a peace officer or first responder is considered a very serious crime and a felony in most situations. Battery on or of an officer occurs when an individual unlawfully touches, strikes or hits a police officer, firefighter, code enforcement officer, corrections officer or first responder in any fashion while that individual is carrying out his or her lawful duties. There is no need for injury to occur to be charged with this crime."
The rules are different for assault on a cop compared to assault on a civilian.
Brunner got a free pass, the ruling class in Old Boy Janesville is above the law. It doesn't matter whether it was a heated emotional situation. Many prison inmates who are in prison for violent crimes did the crime under the same emotional heated conditions.
Try it sometime, you won't get away with it. Make all the excuses you want, the guy got a free pass. Justice was put away to be served to average citizens not ex police chiefs and city council members.

Mr Brunner may have been a good councilman but he made a very poor decision when he pushed a police officer who was only doing his job and then asked the police for a professional courtesy and not report the incident. He made the right decision to resign and not bring further embarrassment to himself. Now take our other embarrassment, Rashkin with you, will ya.

taxandspend...if your referring to battery to a police officer statute 940.19 (battery) requires "bodily harm" the officer reports he was not injured. Please specify the felony your referring to.

Guilty until proven innocent?
What evidence is there to pester the DA about this unless you have direct involvement with the case?
Seems like a lynch mob is developing.

Funny how years ago when I worked the road in Rock County the DA had a class and stress the importance that if you were hit by a suspect, he wanted them charged with a felony to an officer as he took this serious.

We don't have all the details so we shouldn't stand in judgement of the man. However, a city council member must never strike a police officer, let alone resist arrest. So, without judging what Mr. Brunner did or why, Mr. Brunner has disqualified himself as a council member. His resignation is appropriate and appreciated.
Now I wonder who the city's public sector unions will appoint ...errrr... support to replace him.

None of us were there. No one knows what truly happened. Let's not be judgmental. Someday the tables may be turned and you might be in the spotlight. Let the story rest. Good luck to Mr. Brunner and his family, and thank you for your service to this community.

I agree with taxandspend that he should have been charged like anyone else would have with a felony battery to a police office. See what would happen if you or I would hit a cop. He was given special treatment not given the the normal public. Over the years there has been special treatment given to various police officers in Janesville and Rock County.

We're all human and make mistakes, especially in the heat of emotional personal moments. Give him a break people & don't let one misstep define him.

I feel for Mr. Brunner and his family. If you have never had contact with CPS, consider yourself lucky. I do feel he made the right move in resigning.
