Should governor rule the schools?
MADISON, Wis. (AP) — Teachers and parents have filed a lawsuit challenging a law that hands the governor more power in state agencies’ rule-making process.
Republican Gov. Scott Walker signed a measure in May that gives him the power to approve agency rules before they can take effect. The lawsuit alleges the law tramples the state schools superintendent’s constitutional powers to administer public education and parents will be harmed because their tax dollars will go to implement the provision.
The plaintiffs include Mary Bell, a teacher and president of the Wisconsin Education Association Council, the state’s largest teachers union. WEAC also has filed a federal lawsuit challenging Walker’s collective bargaining law.
Walker’s spokesman issued a statement accusing Bell and WEAC of polarizing the state and wasting tax dollars on another "outrageous" lawsuit.

Walker is the one who provokes lawsuits, putting working families in a choke hold. His supporters blame teachers like they are reliving some bad childhood memory about their poor study habits.
In 1996, in the case of Thompson v Craney, the Wisconsin Supreme Court struck down a similar plan to remove educational policymaking authority from the state superintendent

I agree with much of what you say, especially the way most media report the news. But just because I watch Fox News doesn't mean I have no sense of humor-one of my favorite shows is RENO 911, so I get Stewart. But not for real news.

My apologies on suggesting the teachers were "pathetic". I agree that was a mischaracterization and what I meant was some of their behavior is pathetic (IMO). Although I do not need to explain myself, my education is equal to or surpasses many of the teachers. My salary reflects my education and determination to succeed and I have accomplished this without being a union member. I have progressed through the ranks on my own merits, not because of “collective bargaining”.
My comments on neutrality (union vs. non-union) are factual. Only lately have I witnessed such greed and selfishness coupled with the hatred of a person/party and the ideals they believe in. The inconsistencies of the union logic and lack of compassion for others that cannot afford to pay anymore have really opened my eyes to the realities of the union. They used to stand for safety, reasonable work hours, compensation that was reasonable for the job performed, training for the growth of the workforce, to assure there was no discrimination in hiring/promotion and for 8 hours pay for 8 hours worked, to name a few. So many of these ideals have been corrupted in the modern day union mentality: people that are doing mundane jobs are being paid way over market wages, people don’t work the entire day (although they may be at their place of employment), sick time is abused and overlooked, the problem employee is protected and defended by the union (even though they know the behavior is wrong) and the union keeps pushing for more control, wages, benefits and more involvement into management decisions. The union mentality seems to be; throw more money at the problem by higher wages or more employees. This is similar to the ‘Big Government’ mentality of building a bloated bureaucracy that is by nature cumbersome and extremely inefficient.
I know these times are troublesome to some people, but for the sake of our children/grandchildren, we have to change how we do things and stop unions from dictating the outcome. Entitlement is a thing of the past. You want it…earn it.

The WEAC and school boards have the system in such a mess someone has to take over and I hope the governor can do something, and if not then change it. Just don't ever give it back to the union or teachers period.

Take your hatred for unions out of the equation...Do you believe that Governor Walker OR ANY GOVERNOR being able to, "to approve agency rules before they can take effect."?
.
Remember, eventually a Deomcrat will be governor with the ability to abuse this power.

i totally understand he comes from humor and his show IS satire. that being said, he doesnt make up the things people say and ive seen him make fun of the current potus numerous times. did you watch that video poorrichard?? its hard to deny the hypocrisy in it yes?? i enjoy that mr stewart is a comedian because he makes fun of whoever needs to be made fun of. one of the best bits ive seen him do is when he made fun of how the dems campaigned(they didnt) for mr kennedys senate spot that scott brown won. mr stewart obviously leans liberal. that doesnt give the liberal politics or liberal media a free pass. it is, in my opinion, and my opinion is pretty much echoing mr stewarts, but its a sad state of politics, and more importanty those who cover politics that he is given so much credibility because of the way the 'news' sources report the news. msnbc included. yes poorrichard he is a comedian, but the funny part is that he doesnt make up what other people say, or lie about, or are hypocrites about, he just points it out. as i stated, if you watch fox news on a regular basis, im sure the point of the video will be lost on you. you confirmed that sir. its a humor much like jerry seinfeld...its soooo funny because its soooo true. buenos noches.

bassman you have the wrong party that put us in the position we are in right now. Yes Walker is a college dropout and that's like telling a construction worker how to put up a wall. He knows nothing about education. Our good teachers will continue to leave our state and the teachers that do remain will not be doing our children a service. You get what you pay for. Especially the teachers in Milwaukee need a better eye but then again it was led by republicans.

SarahB1 said "Most journalists see AP as vanilla or white bread --- straight down the middle with no bias." Most "journalists" lean so far left I'm sure they would think that way. That's one reason why they think Fox is so far right. These AP headlines consistently give a negative slant against Republicans on almost every story.

Did you Dem's or Liberals or anyone else hear our JOKE of a President 's speech yesterday ? He was a disgrace to our Country and will be until we have leadership like Scott Walker. MPS has recieved the notice, and the law was effective today, that system alone had a 400.000 deficit and when the new law landed they were 1.5 million in the black,HMMMM makes sense don't it !

Honorfirst, I absolutely agree. For our public employees to hold the entire state hostage because a union is involved, is detrimental to the financial welfare of this state. They had many great financially lucrative years. Those years are over. We can't blindly support them anymore.
Honestly, from my heart, I hate the fact that so many families will be financially impacted by this. But ALL of us in the state, are affected by a budget in debt. My grandchildren need to have an opportunity to pursue their dreams, without concerns over the financial health of the state or country.
The idea of living beyond one's earnings is over.

Another temper tantrum by our pitiful teachers union. And people wonder why we want a voucher system? The teachers union is a group that won't be happy until they suck every penny out of the taxpayers. They represent a group of pathetic individuals (educated maybe, but lacking integrity and common sense) that can't understand why they can't have their way.
Follow through on the suit, but if it is defeated or found to be frivolous, then the state should sue WEAC for expenses and libel against the state.
These unions are turning so many people against them and all they stands for. I used to be pretty neutral on union or non-union, but my eyes have been opened to what a bunch of bottom dwellers they really are.
