Cullen wants to run for governor

By GAZETTE STAFF   Friday, December 2, 2011 - 5:48 p.m.

MADISON—Janesville Democratic Senator Tim Cullen on Friday said he hopes to be the person his party rallies around in the case of a recall election. Cullen said he has a track record of bipartisanship and would be the best candidate to reunite the state that “is angrily divided” like he’s never seen it.

United Wisconsin, the statewide organization working for the recalls of Gov. Scott Walker and Lt. Gov. Rebecca Kleefish, this week announced it has gathered more than 300,000 signatures in the first two weeks of the 60-day effort. More than 540,000 signatures are needed to trigger a recall election.

No one has formally announced a campaign for the election that could take place in spring.

Cullen was elected to the senate last year. He also was a senator in the 1980s and has served on the Janesville School Board and the Janesville City Council.

kaysbrew- Cullen and his 14 associates are responsible for raising the awareness of the role of government and for that I am impressed. He did not " high tail" it with union funds. He left the state because his Republican colleagues refused to even discuss the bills being submitted and had he stayed in the state he could have and would have been forced back to Madison to vote on something that hadn't been discussed by anyone but a very few Republican constituents. The Walker gang didn't count on the strength of the elected Democrats. I think they maybe "get it" now.

- Cullen high tailed it to Illinois on union money and cost us, here in Wisconsin, millions of tax payer money shutting down our ELECTED government. Yes, I said ELECTED, by the people. Not by the union heads.

Once again, the people of this great state have spoken and as usual the liberals refuse to take NO for an answer.

It's all about control and deception. Power and money. The liberals do not know any other way.

Is name calling effective in supporting your candidate or supporting your party's movement? For those of you that do it, are you doing it for the benefit of who you support or do you do it to make you feel better? Why waste so much of your time? Why not find out about all the good about your party / candidate and stand tall based on that? To be honest, I give anyone credit who will run for public office up against such angry, negative people. Yes, there are many good people in this world but there are many people angry and keeping our country stagnant. This is the perspective of a mother raising children who has owned a business and has been involved in a union. The bitterness in this country is getting out of hand.

Governor Walkers bio says he left collage and went to work for the American Red Cross. Reading some of these comments, a person would think Walker lived in his parents basement playing video games smoking a fat one.

Biography: Born in Colorado Springs, Colo.; grew up in Delavan; lived in Wauwatosa for past 17 years. Married for 17 years to Tonette. They have two sons: Matthew, 16, and Alexander, 15.

Resume: Walker left Marquette University before graduating, taking a job in marketing and development with the American Red Cross. He was elected to the state Assembly in 1993 and served until he became Milwaukee County executive in 2002.

Poo this is what happens when you step into something thinking you understand it v. what is really going on.

My first statement, about this, was in regards to fear telling others to research a person fully before coming to a partisan decision. I simply asked if he was starting a new way of dealing with these things as before he had declared a cable news show personality with no experience, maddow, was more qualified in public union law issues than walker. You tossed in your 1 cent listing her education while skipping right over her experience or abilities. I never expected you to grasp the issue seeing it was never addressed to you. After all you have enough trouble thinking carrying signs are courageous and sitting at home calling mayors of cities in other states is productive.

Sorry for stepping in here, Fear, but RAF's inability to propose a logical argument is just too irresistible.
-
RAF first said to Fear, "Your second posting on the gazette declared that rachel maddow was MORE QUALIFIED TO SPEAK on the situation of state unions rights (the law) than walker."

RAF then said to Fear, "Fear how exactly does a person with a piece of paper that studied politics have MORE EXPERIENCE AND ABILITIES than a person that has proven record of doing it?"
-
RAF, your first statement was a response to Fear stating that Maddow was more qualified to speak (offer a perspective or analysis) on the union rights laws than Walker was. Your second statement asks who has more experience and abilities of having done something (implemented union rights laws.) You changed the target somewhere between your two statements and are now unfairly asking Fear to compare apples and oranges, when Fear compared an apple with an apple -- albeit one good apple and one bad apple. Rachel being the good apple, of course.

"we all know how all of you righties hold actual educational qualifications, instead of rhetoric from a guy who couldn't finish college. Means nothing right?"
-
There you go tossing that rhetorical blanket over people you have differing views with. To be accurate education qualifications (degree) are for the most part prerequisites and not absolutes, 10 people with the same degree still have differing abilities. The very reason certifications came into being was to provide evidence of an ability level or skill, our state requires a teaching certificate in addition to a degree. Taking the driver’s education class does not provide the needed skills 16 year olds need to be on the roadway with others. I do consent the completion of a degree, in a certain field of study, does provide a great basis for knowledge for building on; but it is not the peak of a career.

I do enjoy reading the critiques of walker because of his lack of a degree. Hope they understand this is nothing new as there have been many governors that didn’t finish a bachelor’s degree include 2 current sitting governors.

Fear how exactly does a person with a piece of paper that studied politics have more experience and abilities than a person that has proven record of doing it? Using yours and poo's theories a person with a doctorate in mechanical engineering or physics is a better race driver than tony stewart. Nice try, she is nothing more than an educated talking head, having no more "ability" to perform that task, union law, than limbaugh. The point was, you have delighted telling others to read up on a person and their abilities before making a partisan decision about them. Still wondering when you will take your own advice.

maxcap,
That video "proof" that Repubs keep harping about proves NOTHING. If it proved anything at all, it would be getting a lot more press. It shows young people that could be 18 signing petitions. It shows a person giving cigarettes to young people that could be 18. Where is the indisputable proof that the cigarettes were explicitly given in exchange for signatures? It's not there. As a former smoker, I've given cigarettes to people attending the same function as I on numerous occasions. I wasn't giving them away with any conditions attached. I was just sharing. I know that's not a concept familiar to many Repubs, but it does happen out there in our communities from time to time.

gpawcat,
I think you're missing my point. Sure, it's easy to get the number of signatures necessary to trigger the recall elections. The real accomplishment is getting the turnout during the actual recall election to reverse the previous election results. Just look at the recall elections from earlier this year. The Repubs failed and the Dems were only successful in 2 races. It appears the Dems have a lot of support for a statewide recall of Gov Walker. In a state that, until the last election, consistently voted Democrat in recent years, it looks like Walker's actions have started the scales tipping back toward the Dems. So, the reason that I think your theory is flawed is because if Walker is recalled and Cullen takes over, all he would have to do is not act like a complete power monger and puppet for billionaire businessmen and, even if a recall is triggered through petition, there won't be enough enthusiasm among the overall electorate to vote him out. Triggering the recall isn't any kind of political victory. It's meaningless unless you unseat the target of the recall. I doubt Cullen would be stupid enough to try to pull any stunts similar to the idiocy that Walker has engaged in. Thus, a second recall election would probably end up in Cullen's favor as well.

Well, everyone know that's true! On one hand we have a graduate of Stanford, who is a Rhodes scholar and has a PhD from Oxford University. On the the other hand we have a college dropout who, judging from his performance as Milwaukee County executive and having initiatives challenged and reversed by courts, apparently knows very little about any law. So let's recap that... Oxford PhD/Rhodes scholar vs. college dropout. Oh, and by the way, that would be Rachel who has the PhD.

Let me explain my theory to WalterReuther@10:31am.
Governor Walker won the election with 52% of the vote or 1,128,159 votes. Tom Barrett got 47% or 1,005,008, and 25,556 people threw their vote away for some one else, and 1% wrote in some foolish name like Donald Duck. Recalls need 25% of all votes cast,or 540,028 to have a recall election. The dems & repubs only need to get one half of their voters that voted for them in the general election to sign the petition. This is no big outstanding achievement when a million people voted for you the first time. Even if senator Cullen is elected governor, the repubs will come back because they don't need a reason, just 540,028 signatures, and a whole lot of money. The 52% that voted for Walker might not like having their 2010 vote cancelled out. The voters may even believe the dems are stealing the 2010 election for political power. This is why I say, it doesn't matter if Cullen or anyone else is elected. What are the democrats going to say? We won the recall, so get over it?

The 1%'s time has come to an end. It is time for the rest of those who don't understand or refuse to understand to open up their eyes and become informed.

THE RECALL IS HAPPENING. ABSOLUTELY.

Even the Gazette editorial staff understand this now. It was announced on last evening's news that they are supporting Sen. Cullen for governor, someone who can unite the people of our state.

Our state of Wisconsin can't wait. That is why people of the state are banding together in every village, town, city, and in every nook and cranny of our state to recall a governor who has chosen to be more like a dictator than a governor. The people would have worked with him had he chosen to work with us. But he didn't. He would not negotiate. How many times did he say that anyway?

Become informed, people. The recall is happening, no if's and's or but's about it.

one943,
That would be all well and good if it was a matter of mere ideological differences. The problem is Walker is governing in bad faith. He has continually pursued policies that he claims to have campaigned on but never did. He says he's attacking unions to correct the budget but when he was recorded speaking to someone he thought was David Koch, he showed his true colors. This is not about disagreeing on politics. This is not even about public sector benefits. This is about a way of life that is under attack. No union, public or private, should have it's right to collectively bargain stolen by a government. I'm sure all the "small government" proponents would be able to agree with that.

Cullen will work with sane conservatives (he's shown this many times in the past) and will oppose insane liberals (again, check his history) to make Wisconsin a fair state. Educate yourselves before you cast your vote.

If your candidate's election theme is that his policies have cost Wisconsin jobs, he misled the electorate about his plans and actions during and after the campaign and that he has divided the citizens of this state one against the other, but he has never been to Illinois, you might be a Republican.

Republicans only love charities because they provide warm fuzzy tax writeoffs, and they do anything to avoid paying their fair share, ANYTHING!!

Iuld urge anyone to go to Senator Cullen's website to actually LEARN about the man and his votes on bills/legislation. Of course many will just bash and destroy a GOOD mans charecter because of blind ideology, but actually reading about him and his positions might be an intelligent way to vote, instead of idiocy and parroted rhetoric.

Link;
http://legis.wisconsin.gov/senate/cullen...

Just do alittle research, instead of watching TV/radio and make your OWN decions. Too many in this country/state making decisions on who to vote for.

"running from their jobs"? NO! They wer DOING their job!! They certainly weren't vacationing ! That was the ONLY choice they had, and try to remember that the majority in Senator Cullen's district AGREE with the action.

Wow what a shock, the pro-Walker repeaters are in here repeating!! Walker himself said that Tim was a reasonable man, just "Not one of us." That should be enough of a reason to run.
To all of the Illinois repeaters, try to remember that they were within their jobs to do what they did, and I kno that it's hard for you to hear anything but what you want to, but they were doing what the people who VOTED for them wanted them to do!! Wonder why NONE of them were recalled successfully? They were forced into that action by a terribly ideological over reach by Walker and his people.
Is that really all you people have? Because I scroll through all the comments here and that is the ONLY thing I hear. I had the pleasure of meeting Mr Cullen and his grand daughter when I was thanking him in person, and he was a very gracious kind man.Since Russ won't be running , he was the one I was hoping would run and I think he would be an excellent choice, that could win!! I don't see Cullen's leaving the state as "not doing his job" or as "an act of cowardice", but rather as quite the opposite. Those of you who think otherwise - and that he can't or shouldn't win because of it - are missing two very important points: First, to the majority of those who oppose Walker Cullen's actions were very positive things and make him a hero of sorts. Second, ALL who oppose Walker will vote for the other candidate, no matter who it is. These things would give Cullen a pretty good chance.

The people of WI have learned their lesson with the clown we have as Governor now. They will turn out to the polls in mass from here on out. The Republicans gave it everything they had to elect Walker and it was still a pretty slim margin even though 2010 was a down year for Democrat turnout. Never again. Why do you think the Republicans have been trying to make it harder on people that vote Democrat to actually vote?

Really doesn't matter who is governor, the damage the unions, recalls, even the threat of recalls are catastrophic to Wisconsin's economy. Business like stability. Recalling politicians every year means business can't depend on who's in charge or what direction Wisconsin is going. Even if Senator Cullen wins, the republicans will recall him in a year, so it makes no difference in the long term planning.

It's hard to imagine that anyone in WI doesn't feel the state is "angrily divided", yet almost without exception the hate is directed at your neighbor who might be making a few thousand dollars more than you or belong to a union and you don't, etc. I can understand that you would like what your neighbor has, etc. (but if I remember correctly there is a commandment regarding that and I've read that many of you would like those commandments posted more freely). You may or may not have the required degree that your neighbor does in order to achieve that salary, etc. so we could argue endlessly (and I believe we have) about the unfairness of it all. But what I find most shocking is the apparent ignoring of many, many CEOs making hundreds of times what the average worker is at the company s/he runs. Like them or not the 99% seem to be more focused on that injustice than any of these blogs. It seems obvious to me that the more severe the wealth gap becomes the less we, our children and our grandchildren will have. I'm not willing to accept that and marvel at those who seem to be. I recognize that many readers of this post will already have formed a response in opposition to it before they finish reading it, so I'm not expecting to sway too many opinions. So I'll continue wondering why so many people are willing to jeopardize the well-being of their offspring for the satisfaction of bashing their neighbors (who likely used to be their friends). I haven't had too many friends in the 1% and I've always tried to stick by my friends.

If memory serves me correctly was he not one of the Senators that ran to Illinois when collective bargaining was being debated and voted on. That may come back to bite him in the *** come election through either a general election or a recall. I would have to think long and hard about that before I could decide about that. In my opinion I think I will wait and see if Walker will be recalled first and then see who will run against him if Walker is recalled. I just want to be sure if Walker is recalled that we have a candidate that can beat him come Election Day so this can be decided once and for all.

jv93,
Much like you "didn't ask to be protected or taken care of", I didn't ask for you to "really feel bad" for me as you say you do. Your point about campaign contributions from unions to Dems is silly. Republicans are obviously linked to large corporations and other private interests through large campaign donations. Why should Democrats be held to a different standard when it comes to contributions?
"OH NO! They have large campaign contributors, too? Those awful Democrats!"
You act as though Democrats are the only ones that receive hefty donations from large organizations. Why do you think Republicans work so very hard to destroy unions? It's not about helping the state solve budget issues. That's a ruse. It's about weakening the political opposition. If the GOP can cripple the unions, they have effectively crippled the Democratic party's main source of campaign contributions. It's all about creating an uneven playing field. Everyone that can think for themselves can see that, and that is why we're seeing a widely supported Recall effort against Walker. When they fled the state, the 14 senators brought the full spotlight onto Scott Walker for what he truly is and what he was doing and continues to do. That is why they are heroes.
p.s. If you voted at all, you asked to be protected or looked out for in some way or another. If you didn't vote, what are you even complaining for?

Dear reader of these comments - as you read, please consider the fact that most of those posting have already made up their minds about who they are voting for without even knowing the candidates. The Tea Party loyalists will be voting for Walker no matter who runs - and they are making a lot of the comments here. The hard core democrats will vote for anyone but Walker - which could mean a pretty extreme left candidate may have a chance as well. But Tim Cullen is the only really moderate out there. He is a good choice for the Democrats because he is the type of person who could attract the votes of moderate Republicans or independents (such as myself). With the state so evenly divided - we need a candidate who is in the middle. So let the haters hate, but for me, I think Tim Cullen is the answer!

No doubt about it. Tim Cullen and the rest of those senators are bonafide American heroes for the action they took to delay the hateful division and creeping fascism Republicans and Scott Walker initiated in our once friendly and united state. It took plenty of courage to do what they did knowing they would catch flak and risk their careers over it. We don't see enough of that selfless giving for the common good from our public officials anymore. Even Walker said of Cullen, "He's not there for political reasons. He's just trying to get something done" speaks volumes for Tim. Most of them are looking for a campaign hand-out to calculate an advantage for the next election. Not Cullen. Walker gave him the best endorsement he could possibly ask for. Cullen For Governor!!

The courageous senators who did the only thing they could to stop the Walker-Fitzgerald steam roller are akin to the heroic United States senators of years gone by who would filibuster for hours on end to prevent passage of legislation with which they had deep ethical and moral concerns. Not only that, but it focused the spotlight squarely on Walker policy and started a national discourse. We saw the first results in Ohio recently where voters overturned very similar legislation to Walker's by an overwhelming majority. Thank you for your years of service, Tim. Having a puppet Governor operating for Koch dictators is far from freedom ringing!

I suppose he could, since he will be on the recall list soon also.

I don't know what makes anyone think that collective bargaining would ever be reinstated to what is was. Regardless of the outcome of the recall it has already been proven that the changes have worked for many communities, and states like IL and CA are looking to do the same thing and the are run by Democrat Govs. I wouldn't pin my hopes on Cullen or any of the other 13 fugitive Senators to change anything that has taken place.

You have to be kidding. One who cannot keep his own house in order should not be allowed to run the state house.

Tim Cullen is just a good, really nice person....he'd make a good Governor.....but the ones with high incomes and Walker supporters on the gazette don't like decent people like Tim

Che: Cullen did no such thing. The governor divided this state by his shenanigans. And the governor continues to do it. He has not changed his path since the day he took his oath of office.

This is the beginning of the return to sanity for our state.

Tim, you can count me in for everything I can do to help get you elected. I would guess this means Russ Feingold will not be throwing his hat in the ring as I think Tim would have sat this one out in deference to Russ. Either Russ or Tim would make a GREAT governor. Tim is exactly the type of person we need - someone who has willingly worked across the aisle his entire political life. Happy days are here again!

Maybe when he RAN to Illinois, to throw his tantrum and not do his job, he should have stayed there.

"He's pretty reasonable, but he's not one of us. . . . He's not there for political reasons. He's just trying to get something done. . . . He's not a conservative. He's just a pragmatist." -- Scott Walker on Tim Cullen. That's all Cullen needs to played over and over again like Walker's ads are today. He's a shoo-in.

He's in the top three and has the best campaign plug out of them all when Walker said, "He's not one of us, he's a pragmatist!"
