All DMV offices closed April 2 for employee furlough
MADISON--Wisconsin Division of Motor Vehicles offices, will be closed Friday, April 2, when staff members take another day of the required 16 unpaid days that must be taken over the two-year budget period.
Employee furloughs for all university and state employees are part of the 2009 – 2011 state budget.
DMV’s automated phone system will remain available so that motorists can still make road test appointments and have access to recorded information.
Titling and registration services are offered by many third-party partners such as some police stations, grocery stores and financial institutions around the state and can be found at the WisDOT web site.
DMV would like to remind customers that many services like vehicle registration renewal do not require a visit to a service center and are available online 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
All DMV offices will resume regular business hours on Monday, April 5.

jv92 and lovemycountry you believe that when you read these blogs or short articles it makes you experts. Far from it. If you could show some real sites with real numbers it might give your arguments more solid footing, but right now you may want to watch your footing. The Wisconsin taxpayer article states that nearly 58% are employed in the education field. With the cost of earning a degree and continuing education that is required is it any surprise that the salary might be more than someone that doesn't. I am not a teacher but volunteer at my kid’s school after work and get to see how hard some of these teachers work. Do you volunteer any time? I also work for the government for 16 years and make less than 44k. I would like to make the average that everyone is talking about. I am working three (3) jobs so that I can keep the bill collectors at bay. I don't have any fancy toys or even go on a vacation. My vehicles, a truck and a geo, that I own are 8 and 21 years old and I don't plan on getting any collector plates for my geo. There is no overtime for employees, period.

I get tired of hearing how the state worker is under paid compared to the public worker. If that is the case why don't state workers leave and go into public work? No jobs available and they would have to Work!

went4milk--Show me where you got the info that they will be collecting overtime next week? I don't know whether they are overpaid or not but apparently there is no pleasing some people. On the one hand you complain that they are overpaid and then you bitch because they close their doors for a day "due to budget cuts".

MaryFan: Do you know that next week these POOR underpaid workers will be getting overtime because they are now behind in their work? Please do not tell me how State workers are under paid.

Lovemycountry,
The article from examiner.com is truly chilling. Increasing government with a decreasing tax base. How can you characterize that other than IMPLOSION?

jv92 - good post. Here are WI #'s... Average WI state employee makes $51,000/year, or $71k inc. benefits. The average job in WI pays $40k. It takes 10 private sector workers to pay for one state employee's compensation.

Actually each department such as the DMV and each UW campus chooses the furlough days they will be closed. It is the departments and employees that are making a statement to the governor and legislature that their mandatory paycut affects the public as well. While yes they are lucky to be employed, most state employees are paid well below the private sector before the pay cut. And the regular employees have no say in when furlough days will be. They have been mostly chosen on other public holidays or before holiday weekends so as not to affect the public too much.

The state could have set up a system where the furlough days were spread out in such a way that services and offices would not have to have been closed. I mean really...if this were a private business how would it have been done? Instead the state wants to "remind" the taxpayers how important they the "public servants" really are so they stick it to you as much as they can by closing everything for a day. Then make as much of a big deal as they can over it by placing signage on doors and buildings saying that "due to budget cuts, we are closed today." What a joke.

Considering they can't spread out their furlough days like a private business would have to, we've still been coping. SO, let's close them every Friday, and save millions in taxpayer $ .

It is Good Friday. I would like a furlough day. Ha what am I thinking everyday is a furlough day lately.
16 days off plus the paid vacation days. I would be okay with this plan.
