GREEN BAY

A Green Bay man convicted of killing his 4-month-old son by smashing the boy’s head into a door has been sentenced to life in prison.

A Brown County judge ruled Tuesday that 22-year-old Jeremiah Felton won’t be eligible for parole for 30 years.

The Green Bay Press-Gazette reports Felton is trying to get a new trial and subpoena juror cell phone records.

A jury convicted Felton in June 2008 of killing Jeremiah "J.J." Felton. Shortly after the verdict, one juror told the court about receiving a text message referencing the trial. The message came from the juror’s co-worker and was sent earlier in the day but not received because the juror’s phone was off.

Felton’s lawyer wants to investigate, saying the juror might have received additional communications about the case.

the article says "eligible for parole" after 30 years, bobb, not "will be released". The earliest he could be let out is when he is 52. Parole board could deny it and keep him in a while. Still sucks. Should be "without the possibility of parole". IMHO, he should be sentenced to a 9mm bullet strategically placed behind the right ear.

I can never understand how a "life" sentence equates to a given number.

Ahhh our justice system kind of worked here but why a different standard for the same crimes?? Why does he get possiblity for parole? Sicko. As I have told before in my posts, my 2 yr old nephew was beaten to death by his male babysitter, he was bruised all over, his liver was all but cut in two causing massive internal bleeding, in the very same courthouse as the above case, my nephew's assailant received only 15 years prison and 15 years probation. Same crime should be the same sentence, JMO. I will never understand how a judge can give a lesser sentence for the same crime due to a plea bargain, is he just greatful it saved him some time and hassle? Craziness

These kinds of stories gag me. I can't even imagine what kind of people they are to do this to their own children. I can't find strong enough words.

Terrible crime! Poor baby boy. On another note, Stephanie Witt (formerly of Janesville) will be in court here tomorrow regarding her felony charges of causing great harm to her toddler daughter in late 2008. This is the case in which the little girl suffered a severe head fracture here in Janesville and spent days (possibly weeks?) at UW Hospital in Madison. The belief was that the child was abused in the home before falling unconscious in the parking lot at the Janesville Mall. The boyfriend took a plea bargain last year. I hope this Ms. Witt does not receive the same break.
