MADISON, Wis. (AP) — A Republican candidate for governor says he supports limiting the governor and all state lawmakers to no more than 12 years in office.

Mark Neumann said Monday that if elected he would serve no more than two terms as governor.

Neumann is a former congressman who is running for the Republican nomination against Milwaukee County Executive Scott Walker and others.

Neumann says the governor and other constitutional officers should not be allowed to serve any more than three terms, or 12 years, in office. He says state senators should be limited to three four-year terms as well and state representatives should get no more than six terms, or 12 years.

He's also calling for allowing citizens to circulate petitions to get proposed law changes on the ballot.

Ask him to send his kids to war??? Call his wife and ask her if she is willing to have her kids protect this country so she cant sleep at night worrying about them. We will spend 2 trillion on a war and you call me a socailist, wow.. keep listing to rush and glen my friend and they will pay all your bills

The problem stems from two party politics. Lifelong politicians from parts of this country run the house and the senate---voted in by people of their district. These are the ones that control legislation flow and direction of our government. This is the very reason we need term limits. The parties are quite happy to continue the investment needed to keep their power players in office---promotes agenda; diametrically opposed to what is needed.

You know how the old saying goes: "Term limits are made to be overturned followed by paying $175 for each vote."

Agree with redhawk here. I am against term limits because the people should decide.

This is old stuff from 1994 when Mr. Neumann was elected to Congress. They wanted term limits then too. Many of those congressman are STILL in Washington.
Elections are term limits. If things are bad enough, any politician will have a term limit. Regarding Paul Ryan, who is a life-time politician, I guess it hasn't been bad enough or he hasn't an opponent strong enough.

Good bye ryan and good riddens, he will be in office all his life because thats all he has been taught.. we have paid his way all his life,,, hope his kids go into the army to help protect us like all the rest he put into war.. its time for all these loosers to go back were they came from and thats all sides!!! Mr Ryan !! you have done nothing for this area!! the only thing you have done is pad your pockets and work on your resume for bigger jobs in washington. Do you folks think someone like ryan would vote for this?? no way, this guy will live his life off you and me and the best benefits in the world that we pay for, next time you see him out have the balls to ask him. or when he is at the dairy breakfeast ask him.. ask him if his kids are going to serve in the forces?? he wont give you a answer!! so Mr Neauman your plan will never work as long as you have people like Ryan in office even when he is one of your own. but we do need all these folks out of office. Maybe ryan can help Limbaugh out and work on his staff! seems Cheney likes this guy. then you can get off the tax payers payroll. sorry i went on , but im tired any politician in office more then 6 years.. happy new year to all. Even you Mr Ryan

The problem with term limits is that lobbyists don't have them.

I like this idea for a couple of reasons:

1. How many great sequels have there ever been? Every lawmaker has their own perspective and ideas. After a couple of terms, they will be predictable and lack originality. Other lawmakers will always know where you stand, and worse yet, the lobbyists.

2. I always cringe when I hear the terms, "Freshman", "Senior", or worse yet, "Ranking". Every elected official with the same title, should have an equal amount of power as a newly elected lawmaker. There needs to be a level playing field, so everyone has a chance to enact their concerns.

3. If lawmakers know that they have a limited window, they will make the most of it. They will not have time to procrastinate if they know that their days are numbered. Being comfortable is the last place I want an elected official.

4. I respect Mr. Neumann's plan, but would rather see 8 years total. If it was good enough for Mr. Washington, it is should be good enough for every state and federal elected official.

I agree with redhawk. If someone is doing a good job, why give them the "boot" with term limits?
.
It's time the VOTERS do THEIR JOB! If someone needs to be ousted, find someone qualified to run (good luck), then VOTE!

with all due respect to Mr. Neumann, it's not like he'll go broke if he's only in office for 2 years. I think it's a great idea, however, let's be realistic, he's very well to do.
