Talk of reopening a GM plant premature

Despite recent comments by GM North American President Mark Reuss, industry observers say talk of reopening a plant in Janesville or Spring Hill, Tenn., is wildly premature.

Demand is nowhere near the level needed to support the massive capital investment necessary to bring Janesville or Spring Hill back on line, observers said.

Reuss in January said the automaker was looking at reopening shuttered assembly lines at Spring Hill or Janesville to resolve a short supply of hot-selling vehicles.

On Saturday, he told reporters in Florida the company is still considering its options.

Industry observers said Reuss’ comments could be management positioning of itself for upcoming contract talks. Or the comments could be a subtle message to consumers that GM is on an upswing while competitors Toyota and Honda struggle with massive recalls, they said.

RU serious that is the point they wont work regular jobs under $20 an hour like us normal folk. they want the money. this is not intended for the hardworking men and women who did work hard down at the plant. this is to the lets leave early scammers who sat down there and did nothing and then used up all the unemployement oh forget it cuz all the persons i am talking about will think this dont apply to them.

The fact the on more than one occasion GM Janesville has been mentioned, along with Spring Hill, as a site GM is considering is good news. Maybe it will be Spring Hill this time, but we're not dead in the water. Granted, it may not happen tomorrow, next week, or even next year, but it means we're not off the radar. Being one of two plants mentioned isn't bad odds. At this point I would take a mention in passing over the other option, which is absolutely positively nothing unless you like hockey.

GM was able to eliminate a lot of debt - it's only a matter of time before the Janesville plant gets back on-line.

"Janesville GM got blackballed because of the things that were pulled down there which disrupted production..."
What was that, Hank?
"..i say GM and other companies in this area need to stop wining go find a job or go back to school.dont bet on GM coming back..."
Where would that be italiajc...and can you quote me some of those GM whiners so I can bash them, too? I hear so much about them, but funny, I don't see it for myself no matter how hard I look.

i think the gravy train left a long time ago. as a former union man of the united steel workers i just wanted to say that my union was great. when the company i worked for went under the union disappear, we lost everything on the day we were fired. no extended health benefits, no compensation,no TAA, or any other help. unemployment was challenged by the company. i say GM and other companies in this area need to stop wining go find a job or go back to school.dont bet on GM coming back, move on with your lifes. oh and thank you for not transferring and sucking all the unemployment benefits from the area, not going to school and then when you finally figured out that your unemployment benefits were gonna run out transfer to another union ran facility. thank you i say you guys are a joke

facts101...I totally apologize. I read your posting this morning without my contact lenses, and I thought that you said "why do they continue to lease", not "why do they continue to tease". My bad...next time I should put my eyes on before I start to comment. Sorry about that.

Some one should really call PETA. I completely understand that this horse has been dead for a while, but this is animal cruelty at its best.

won't happen for sure. Don't everyone rush to sharpen their resumes anytime in the next decade or more or don't hold your breath. This is just something to write about - slow news day.

Beloit has passed-up Janesville in the race to be the gem of Rock County. When GM returns, Janesville will be able to retake the lead from Beloit. Cross your fingers.

Yah'll don't quite get it. The sold-off equipment would have had to go anyway. To introduce a new product has always been a total revamping of systems. Interior restructuring, code updates, etc. By selling off, and hollowing out the domain; it was/is a prepratory and necesaary step anyway for (if proposed) future product instalations.
I would not expect non-industry detractors to emulate the concept. Far be it to understand "all" the workings of an industry, before we judge or bar-stool bad mouth it? er ummmm That would be uncivilized! Yes, it also would be uninformed and ignorant.
But hey, have a good time ripping again folks. The dead dawg was stirred up again. Yah may as well have at it, AGAIN. LOL.
By the way, it has become a laughing matter now. Yah'll show your true-colours to the world, and eventually, the world sees em'.

From what I've read, they are going to reopen either Spring Hill or Janesville and as it stands now it's likely Spring Hill. GM executives are looking to see what state incentives are available. This was reported in a story as early as yesterday. Both Spring Hill and Janesville are part of the "New" GM, which means they could eventually be active should demand rise. The problem Janesville faces is that it would likely need the most work before being project ready. As a result, my guess is that Janesville is more likely to get a newer product in the future than to be used to fill demand for current designs. My gut tells me this plant will eventually reopen, but it's likely a few years down the road and the jobs it will create will be much different than those it originally left behind. As a result, it's important Janesville moves forward in seeking new businesses. However, at this point anything paying more than 10 bucks an hour would be welcome news to the local economy.

beentheredonethat: Did I say they were leasing anything? I am just saying why spend money on an old plant when they could build a new modern building. So don't put words into my mouth.

facts101, get your facts right. GM is not leasing anything in Janesville. They own the Janesville plant, and it was reported once (either in an article or in these blogs, I'm not sure which) that the building itself is collateral for the government loan.

Why do they continue to tease. GM is not coming back at least not to the old plant. They sold off all the equipment so the money it would take to restart they just don't have.
