MADISON, Wis. (AP) — Dane County authorities say a drunken man stole an ambulance from a ski area with the patient still inside.

The Dane County Sheriff's Department says Fitchrona emergency responders were treating a patient in the back of the ambulance at the Tyrol Basin Ski and Snowboard Area in Mt. Horeb on Monday night. A 24-year-old Illinois man got into the vehicle and drove it around the parking lot.

Dane County Sheriff's spokeswoman Elise Schaffer says police officers from Mt. Horeb stopped him but she didn't have any information on how they did it. Dane County Sheriff's deputies arrested the man.

Mt. Horeb Police Chief Jeff Veloff didn't immediately return a message.

I am confused as to where the driver was if a patient was in there. This story is very incomplete. Where were the EMT'S. Why was a patients in there alone? Where there Emt's and Patients in the back?
My worry is was the patient stable?

"Would you agree that my perspective on a specific situation such as this would be of value in this discussion?"

Yes I would agree.

But when you say.....

"The last thing I need to hear is a lecture from a nurse (4u) as to the severity of this situation."

your' opinion isn't of much value....that's all...

because many could say...the last thing I need to hear is......

"There are many "perspectives" to any given situation..but you just come across as thinking that your "perspective" is the only one that matters."

Would you agree that my perspective on a specific situation such as this would be of value in this discussion? It certainly is of value to those who would have only seen the rhetoric put forth by Nurse4u. My comments are just that - comments. Comments based in fact not conjecture.

he was just trying to establish his point, just like everyother person here.. In this case he is speaking from experience... something people do all the time.. because with experience people gain knowlage, and so on.... now I feel this is far to small of a forum to fight on, so I am not trying to ruffle anyones feathers. Just again... establish a point of view.

JohnDoe - yes, perhaps it may seem somewhat condescending, though not intentional. It was to make a point. One must have perspective to make assertions regarding certain situations, such this one.

Not sure just what you are trying to say...but you do come across as a little condescending.

As a 25 year member of the emergency responder community, I have to chime in here. My initial thought would be that ambulances can be equipped with "kill switches" that allow the ambulance to run and the key be removed, keeping something like this from happening. Given the world we live in, this option should be mandatory for all rescue equipment.

My second thought is that of course this person is a "knucklehead" and should be punished appropriately. Having said that, I would think if you are going to comment on this situation, have an original thought. The last thing I need to hear is a lecture from a nurse (4u) as to the severity of this situation. Those comments would qualify for a gold medal in the "keen eye for the obvious" awards. Those who are true advocates of public safety would at least "google" information about current legislation being considered to make interference with emergency personnel a felony in the State of WI, as it has been in other states. My experience with persons who act so indignant about things of this nature are simply looking to validate themselves.

Now, quite honestly, one side of me laughed when I first heard this. Having actually been in the back of an ambulance working on countless numbers of ill and injured persons, this was a way to ease some of my thoughts of some terrible experinces that plague many emergency personnel for years after the fact. But this is something that only a person who has these experiences would understand and consider when writing in a public forum.

nurse: Being part of the caring professions, I would think it's natural for you to feel that way. Not to get too profound, but this is an idea that seems to dominate political thought. Well, it didn't work...it cost billions of dollars...it caused huge disruptions to the private sector, and it actually increased the number of people "dependent" on the program...but, by golly, the gubmint sure had good INTENTIONS!!
So, obviously, the solution is to spend MORE money! You ask "What IF this patient would have died"? People die all the time due to government. This was a case of a tourist driving around the parking lot.
"An ambulance was deployed to rescue a patient in an emergency" True.
"Not ONLY did he negligently endanger a person's life, he ALSO put people in jeopardy who were in the area". True. A minor jeopardy, depending on the condition of the patient in the back, the driver's level of intoxication, his driving skill, the weather...etc.
I'd prefer to see bigger problems addressed.

I think this should be a felony. Srsly, there was a patient inside!!! What IF this patient would have died because of this? An ambulance was deployed to rescue a patient in an emergency and this a$$ takes off with it. Not ONLY did he negligently endanger a person's life, he ALSO put people in jeopardy who were in the area. Sorry, I don't see the humor.

We can't react lightly to out-of-state guests getting away with driving around a parking lot, whether he was smiling or not. Obviously he should be blindfolded, offered a lit cigarette, and shot by a firing squad.
