Funding available for specialty crops
A note from the Wisconsin Farm Bureau Federation's Ag Newswire:
If you have an idea to make Wisconsin’s specialty crops more competitive in the domestic or international marketplace, you might qualify for a grant to help turn that idea into reality.
The Wisconsin Department of Agriculture, Trade & Consumer Protection will accept applications until 4 p.m. Thursday, April 1, 2010 for competitive process grants under USDA’s Specialty Crop Block Grant Program.
Eligible projects will enhance the competitiveness of Wisconsin specialty crops in either domestic or foreign markets and must provide a benefit to more than just the applicant.
Specialty crops include: fruits, vegetables, culinary herbs and spices, medicinal plants, tree nuts, flowers, and nursery plants.
For a complete updated list of acceptable crops, click here. Additional information and complete application materials are available online here .
For questions about the grant program or completing the application, contact Juli Speck by e-mailing juli.speck@wi.gov or calling (608) 224-5134.

chelleandlou- You hit the nail on the head. I grew up in a farming community in Michigan. I know a lot of happy content farmers, but I never met a rich one.

RPRP,
You are obviously a city slicker with no idea what the life of a farmer entails.
This country relies on farmers for food and clothing at the very least.
Farmers work 365 days a year, hours can be very long, there are no days or holidays off, they work rain/shine, sleet, snow, ice, hot/cold, calm/windy; no 401K, Healthcare, Reimbursement for education; the weather affects their production and ultimately their income, physical labor, doing things one really doesn't like to do but has to be done, and the list goes on.
I grew up on a farm, my family farmed from the time they immigrated to the United States in the 1800s. There is no stronger work ethic than that from a farm family; I for one am very thankful that I had that opportunity. Looking back the busiest time of year January - February lambing season; when ewe's were due we were checking the barn at least every 4 hours if the weather was extremely cold every 2 hours. There was nothing more rewarding than seeing a lamb born and nothing sadder assisting a ewe to deliver a stillborn. I didn't always appreciate it having to do chores everyday and the responsibility that came with it, but I wouldn't trade my experiences for anything.
I believe that everyone should live the life of a farm family for 4 months, planting season, growing season, harvest season, and winter.
Believe me, farmers do not get rich with money, but get rich with reward feeding their family, friends, community, nation, and world. There is nothing more special than the ethic of farm families around the world.

Why should tax payers shell out more tax money to farmers? They already get hugh amounts of tax breaks, low cost loans and hugh subsidies.
