White House: Obama will issue prayer proclamation
By TODD RICHMOND
Associated Press Writer
MADISON, Wis. (AP) – White House officials say President Barack Obama still will recognize a National Day of Prayer after a federal judge’s ruling the day is unconstitutional.
U.S. District Judge Barbara Crabb in Madison on Thursday ruled that the day violates separation of church and state. The ruling comes in a lawsuit filed against the federal government by the Freedom From Religion Foundation.
But Crabb says her order doesn’t block a prayer day until after all appeals are exhausted.
Obama spokesman Matt Lehrich says in an e-mail to The Associated Press that the ruling therefore doesn’t prevent the president from issuing a proclamation for the day recognized in May.
A spokesman for the U.S. Justice Department, which represented the government in the case, declined to comment on the ruling.

someoneme - Marriage is not a religious institution. You go to the courthouse to get a marriage license and in the same courthouse you can file as two men or women as domestic partners. Some churches do promote one man, one woman marriages; but all the church does is perform the ceremony and dictate their beliefs. The marriage is still a civil union not a religious one, no matter what the church says.

Separation of church and state. BULLCRAP!!!! There is a marriage tax credit is there not? Is it not the church of any kind that promotes marriage of a man and a woman. If we truly have separation of church and state. Then this credit should not be there tall. So if they do not want to stick there nose in that one. Then leave the rest of the things alone also!

No matter how you look at this, someone will always be right or wrong, but whom? This is all based on personal opinion and what you believe in. We are all lucky to live in a country that gives us a freedom to choose. Everyone is entitled to their own opinion and has a freedom of speech, but that doesn't mean anyone has to listen.

Napalm, religion is man's way. Relationship is God's way. Some of us know this in life, others will learn about this later.

Let's face it, most of you posting on this board are a bunch of hypocrites. "Oh look at me, they're trying to take away my religious rights..." Give me a break, while I don't agree with Freedom from Religion's tactics, I do agree that we've have more than our fair share of religion rammed down our throats. Separation of church and state should be just that.

Why is it that when you tell people that this government was designed to be a secular one but that has nothing to do with their right to pray at their churches, in their house, on the street corner, in front of school...etc they get mad? It is as if they believe that we live in a theocracy. This decision has NOTHING to do with their right to worship as they believe. I would hope that they would want it that way just in case their beliefs are one day not in the majority, which is exactly why religious men like some of the founding fathers built the constitution without using the word "God". I encourage all to read James Madison, a deeply religious man. Perhaps you will then understand why he did not want the government to get entangled with religion.

gfan: im surprised you havent seen me type this before. there is only ONE plant on earth that could sustain life as we know it if all other options would cease to exist. we could make our food. we could make our fuel. we could make our fibers. if you want to know about the unlimited potentials of the marijuana/cannabis/hemp plant you should google the name jack herer.
jack wrote the book titled 'the emperor wears no clothes'. in the early 70's he and a friend made it their lives mission to free the plant. in that book he takes to task every single untrue thing ever said about marijuana. he covers the history of the plant from its medical use for thousands of years to the importance it played in the beginning of our nations existence and onto the henry anslinger/william randolph hearst conspiricy to make it illegal. i read the book and watched the dvd 'the emperor of hemp' after i had stumbled on them on the amazon. that is what gave me the start on my obsession with showing people what this plant could really do. i hate to sound cheesy, but that book and that man, even though i had never met him, helped kick start my life in the right direction. sit down an burn one w me sometime and ill really blab on:) jack herer passed away yesterday. RIP mr herer. the next burns for you...

If I am praying, it means that I am in conversation with God. If that offends someone, too bad, they should mind their own business.

Obviously another sign of End Times. I know every generation says this, but this time it's has to be for real. Those in the past with their silly little WWI, Great Depression, WWII, Cold War don't hold a candle to todays evil turmoil taking over the world.

Who really cares and does it really matter??? Everyone has the right to believe what they want. Whatever happens, happens and none of us can change our outcomes so everyone needs to get off their high horses, and stop complaining about this crap! I have my own beliefs and i am a Christian, but I am not going to make a stink because someone else isnt. If I want to pray I will pray at any given time, and if the other person doesnt want to hear it then dont listen to it and visa versa!

Of course if you put this to a vote you would come out with a pro-religion result, yet, that is not the function of the courts. The court was drafted to be the one branch that could protect the rights of the minorities weighed against the interest of the majority. All federal judges (like them or not) are aware of this concept and most respect their constitutional role.
How does prohibiting a government mandated prayer interfere with anyone's expression of religion? It doesn’t. Yet, it does offend those who do not share the majority's beliefs. Are the faithful in this country so insecure in their faith that they need a government mandate to pray? The court has not prohibited any one from doing anything on their own, they have simply said the federal government should stay out of the business. (this seems to be a popular belief these days anyway)

We who are NOT anti Christ have rights also and if they would put this to vote I bet we would win as there are far more for then against. If they don't choose to recognise it then DON"T and leave those of us that do recognise God have a coice as they seem to whine and complain to get. I don't go to there belief areas so they don't need to come to mine. Do they ever wonder where the beautiful things come from that we take for granted everyday,do they enjoy the fruit of our soil? Just curious

Bones...no. Where do you get this stuff? Read the decision, it is pretty clear about where the line between government and religion is. Individual expressions of religion have never been banned, yet, state sponsored religion is looked at very carefully. I think the court ruled correctly today.
As to the actual case- The 7th circuit will likely overturn the ruling and the Supreme Court will have a shot...who knows then. There is a pretty good shot the court will want to hear the case because of the splits in the Circuits but with a court that has issued some unpopular rulings lately, they might put off this issue for a while.

So, if a uniformed police officer bows his head and says a prayer before he eats his Big Mac, he can get arrested for making a public endorsement of religion??? What happened to his rights?
