Goodwill attendants find more than donated shoes

MARSHFIELD, Wis. (AP) — Donation attendants for Goodwill Industries say they've discovered everything from dead animals to a handgun when unpacking boxes of donated goods at the Marshfield store.

But, their biggest surprise might have been in the box of donated shoes that arrived recently.

Jerry Schmitz and Len Nyen found a stack of crisp $100 bills tucked inside the box. Schmitz says he was "in a state of shock" when the bundle of cash totaled $13,000.

The two took the money straight to their manager. And using receipts that were in the shoe box, they were able to find the couple who donated the shoes.

The woman, who doesn't want to be identified, says her husband, now in a nursing home, grew up during the Depression and always kept some money at home. She never knew about the cash and says her husband likely forgot about it.

LOVEISGOOD no that is not the only reason but it would be the first thing that popped into my mind if I came across that kind of money in a pair of shoes donated by someone and I found it.

cardtrader ... Is that the only reason you would return the money ? Cuz it might be a plant ... What about what your mother tried to teach you as a child . If it isn't yours give it back, plain and simple.

Wow, that lady was lucky! I don't think it should be expected to donate a portion of that money back to Goodwill. Her husband is in a nursing home and that is a very expensive thing!

As for Goodwill's prices, I think it is quite affordable. Where else can you get name brand jeans for $5? Sure they're slightly used, but if you put the time to look through the racks you can find great deals! Plus, shopping there helps support the community.

melstew47 you are flat out crazy to think you cant go to goodwill and find items cheaper than what you will find anywhere else, go and try to buy a brand new pair of blue jeans at the mall for $4.99 I dare you. And yes you are right your post was mean and off the mark.

she probably needs that money,as far as giving a portion back to goodwill, are you serious?theyre so overpriced, you might as well go to buy it new,id throw my stuff out before id donate it to goodwill.i know this post sounds mean, but people who cant afford to buy new for their kids or themselves go to goodwill and they cant afford that either.

Proof that it's better to give (back) than to receive. Who knows what kindness you'll receive back from a positive choice you've made!

jviers77: On Fox 47's News at 9 they said the person did give a generous donation to Goodwill after she was informed.

I'd like to think there are many people out there that would do this - but my gut tells me probably not. These folks are top notch.

I believe most people would do the right thing. I would worry that it was a plant and I would lose my job if I didn't turn it in.

Kudos to the staff for doing the right thing. It would be nice, though, to see the donor give a portion of that cash back to Goodwill. Good karma goes a long way.
