MADISON (AP) — A cash for clunky appliances program should be starting this fall in Wisconsin. The Legislature’s budget committee on Tuesday approved spending about $5 million in federal stimulus money on the program.

The rebates will range between $25 and $200 and cover clothes washers, dishwashers, refrigerators, freezers, room air conditioners, oil furnaces and dehumidifiers.

To get the rebate for refrigerators, freezers, air conditioners and dehumidifiers, the applicant would have to present evidence that the old appliance had been recycled.

Subject to its approval, the federal Department of Energy is allowing states to craft their own programs using the stimulus money.

Inyafaze, in theory if unions were stronger - companies wouldn't have the chance to move their jobs to foreign soil. But the 80's and 90's saw a downfall in union memberships, then a corporate push for NAFTA with weak union opposition. It doesn't take a history major to see your blame might be misplaced.

Too bad we focussed on making vehicles in Janesville and not appliances.. I suppose the union would have talked the wages up so high that they would have closed them too though.

janesvillemom - I use the "Obama's gonna buy me..." phrase sarcastically to exemplify some people's misconceptions.

WISCONSIN chose to do this with their stimulus money, therefore this particular program is not from Obama or Washington. The money is, but the program is from Wisconsin. Wisconsin could have chosen to spend this money on any number of things. Just to clarify what some people must not have understood.

Obama's gonna pay my mortgage, buy me a new car, give me free health insurance, and now by my a new refrigerator! No wonder Chinese is now mandatory in grade schools.

This program is not only to encourage people to stimulate the economy by buying new appliances, but it is to encourage people to purchase new, more energy efficient appliances to cut down on energy costs. The last time I checked, GE was only one of many appliance manufacturers, so to say they have that much influence on Washington is absurd. Most people I know are making old things last as long as possible through repairs and maintenance rather than buying shiny new toys. Anything we can do to stimulate the economy is a good thing.
