JANESVILLE -- Crime victims can be notified when their attacker is released from the Rock County Jail after a new phone and Internet notification system began running Tuesday.

Rock County has joined the Wisconsin Victim Information & Notification Everyday service to provide people with the custody status of criminal defendants.

Crime victims, family members, law enforcement or anyone else impacted by crime can go online or call a toll-free telephone number to learn the status of offenders in Wisconsin jails.

People also can register to receive an automated notification when offenders are released or their status changes. Notifications can be sent via phone or e-mail.

how about adding sex offenders to this program to every household in an area weather you were a victim or not - you certainly could be a future victim or have a child that could be. Place a call notifying them one is being released in their area - and not just one call either, some may not get the message the 1st time - how about everyday for a week or so in advance.

An interesting iPhone / iPod touch application uses GPS or wifi to find your location and give you a map and exact locations of all sexual offenders around you - with photos, addresses, and other information. It's called Offender Locator, a free version is also available.

I was shocked at the number around here...
