MADISON, Wis. (AP) — Surgeons at the University Hospital in Madison have performed the state's first organ-switching transplant.

Three surgical transplant teams, working more than 12 hours, performed the 'domino' transplant this week on 58-year-old Eino Ahlgrena of Waukesha and Joe Stoikes of Madison. Stoikes received the liver of a deceased donor because he suffered from a potentially fatal genetic condition.

Ahlgren, whose own liver was failing because of a hepatitis C infection, received Stoikes' liver.

Doctor say Ahlgren could show symptoms of the disease that inflicted Stoikes, but not for 20 to 30 years.

Both men are recovering and doctors say they could be released from the hospital this weekend.
