Audit raises concerns over sex offenders
MADISON, Wis. (AP) — A new audit finds that addresses of four registered sex offenders in Wisconsin are the same as those of licensed child care providers.
The Legislative Audit Bureau report released on Wednesday says it could not determine whether registered sex offenders were actually providing child care at the addresses.
The audit says that the state departments of Corrections and Children and Families confirmed the matches and does not believe any children were harmed.
The audit bureau called it a serious problem and says the potential for similar situations exists unless new protections are enacted.
Last month the Department of Children and Families ordered state licensing and county certification staff to search their databases for registered sex offenders.

What do you suggest as an alternative? - A Scarlet Letter if you will --- Special Licence plates, a ID bracelet of some sorts that has GPS built in ..... If these things infringe on their personal right too much for some of you---- forget it just lock them up forever.

2dognight- If the state didn't have licensing for daycare providers, then this would have never been caught, right? What do you suggest as an alternative? Is there a better method, or are you saying that this gov't agency should do a better job at catching these things--because that I would totally agree with.
I do think, though, that we need licensing so that these sorts of things can be prevented.

Anyone who doesn't believe criminals fear armed citizens more than our "so-called" justice system is too stupid to be a conservative!

So much for the licensing by the state. All it does is bring in tax money. It accomplishes nothing else. Licensing for guns?? Does nothing.
Guns protect the homeowner as in Madison recently and and cause the lawbreaker to consider the cost.
The state cannot protect the individual we must be responsible.

tiredofhearit-you do make an interesting argument, and perhaps I was generalizing a little too much, but nonetheless I still would feel less safe with guns all around me than someone not having a DNA sample. I trust the police and courts to their job of finding the person. Just because you don't have a DNA sample doesn't mean you're not going to be able to find the person who committed a crime. Will it make it easier? Yeah, I'll concede that, but I still say having more guns on the street would be much worse. We can disagree, I guess, and I'm sure some will, but I'm sticking to my guns on this one.

artxette; "Do I feel less safe because of it though? No, I absolutely do not." - really? That DNA was collected from pedophiles, rapist's, murderers, etc. etc. for the purpose of indentifying criminals in future crimes. Suppose a rapist (that was previously identified & in the DNA data base) struck in Jvl - would you NOT feel safer because the authorities would know exactly who they were looking for the next day vs. starting over with descriptions, unknown DNA etc.

Artxette. So you feel safe now knowing the only people other than police carrying guns are the illegal ones? Why can't the law abiding people protect themselves?

Woody, I agree with you that state made a mistake with the DNA samples. Do I feel less safe because of it though? No, I absolutely do not.
Do I feel less safe if everyone around me is packing some heat? Well, hell yes I do. Filling the streets with more guns is not the answer to "protecting ourselves."

The state of WI is there to protect us! NOT They do such a good job too! How do you "misplace" over 12,000 DNA samples? Them government acorn heads then have the nerve to say the people can't have concealed carry in this state.

I sure wish I had bureaucrats like these, or the ones involved with the DNA fiasco, playing around with my health care!

That isn't always going to catch them. In Milton, there was an idiot (registered sex offender) using my address for his mail. He'd come when I was at work and get his mail. Until I was home sick one day and caught him. I basically knew who he was but didn't know he was a r.s.o. (twice, by the way), until an acquaintance told me. I looked him up on the state website and found my address listed as his. I called the State phone number to report this and was told he had 5 days to report his address change. I told her that I don't believe he lived there and that for a fact, I had lived there for 6 months at that time. He was never charged for failure to notify the DOC - which is a requirement.
.
I was at the bowling alley there recently and overheard him say that he had moved to Avalon several weeks ago, but when I checked the website, he had his parents address listed outside of Milton - not Avalon.
.
BTW, I am wondering how he is allowed to be around children and teenagers (it was 2 teenagers, under 15, he was caught with). It makes me sick to go to the lanes with my friends and see him in the arcade "playing" with girls of that age and under.
.
Just don't get it.

WHY WOULD ANYONE THINK CHILDREN MIGHT HAVE BEEN HARMED? WHAT DO WE PAY THESE MORONS FOR?
