MADISON, Wis. (AP) — The state Legislature is getting ready to pass a bill that allows lawmakers to secretly designate successors.

The bill would allow each legislator to name three to seven successors. Their identities would be secret. They would come into play whenever an enemy attack leaves nine vacancies in the Senate or 25 vacancies in the Assembly.

The bill also would allow the Legislature to meet at a temporary state capital of its choosing. Right now the governor picks the temporary seat of government. If lawmakers can't physically meet they could hold virtual meetings.

The Senate and Assembly both are poised to take up the measure Tuesday. State Rep. Fred Kessler, a Milwaukee Democrat, has proposed an amendment that would the successors list public.

This is what our elected representatives in Madison and Washington are doing, have been doing and will be doing as long as we have our heads positioned where the sun is unlikely to shine. Because newspapers have dropped the ball and are sleeping with the enemy, it is even more important that we keep vigil using the internet. Personally I'd like to see the internet speed up its' maturation process. It seems to be our only hope now.

Hey Legislators...we need jobs, not secret sucessors; how about doing something constructive rather than something speculative for a change.

This is crazy. If a couple legislators were somehow wiped out by an enemy, don't we already have a procedure to follow....special elections? Additionally, if a great number of the legislators were gone, don't you think the federal government would step in at a time like that? Talk about a do-nothing legislature.
