DARLINGTON, Wis. (AP) — Two Illinois men were struck and killed after their fight spilled onto a southern Wisconsin highway.

Lafayette County sheriff's officials say the two men from Freeport, Ill., were passengers in a vehicle driven by a Darlington woman. The driver pulled over along Highway 78 near the state line after the men began arguing. The two men got out and started fighting on the highway and were struck about 11:30 p.m. Wednesday.

Sheriff's deputies say the men were pronounced dead at the scene. The driver of the vehicle that hit the men was taken to a hospital for minor injuries. Two children in her car weren't hurt.

The driver of the other vehicle was cited for drunken driving.

Note to self: when one gets drunk and needs to fight with other passengers in vehicle at night, restrict area of fighting to road ditch, not pavement where vehicular travel takes place.

Sinsterssis asks "what does it make you"? It makes me a hillbilly, a redneck, "country folk" what ever you want to call it. Go back to one of the little local bars and sit there a few hours mingling and tell me what you would call them. I'm not embarrassed, I still go back and hang with them and they still wear sleeveless shirts to weddings. I left there 30 years ago and am one of the "city cousins" now. I was insensitive to the deceased and I do apologize for that. See you at the next family reunion.

I am not sure what is more sad-the actual event that seriously hurt innocent people-including the deceased love ones' or the ignorance of some of the posts on here. CallitasIseeit-I suggest you change your screen name to thinkbeforeyoupost-you are saying "that part of the state is full or hillbillies" then you go on to clarify "most of them are my relatives." What does that make you? Since when has it become okay in our society to mock our "relatives" or even worse mocking the deceased! Yes-it should not have happened but I guarantee you many people in that "part of the state" and Freeport are grieving the loss of loved ones-show some compassion.I am from "that part of the state" so if that makes me a hillbilly I would rather be that then what people are calling you! I just hope i'm not one of your relatives!

DUECER...I think you need to RE-read the story. The lady with the children was NOT the drunk driver.

2 dimwits get drunk, start fighting in the middle of the highway, get run over and die, and some of you people are mad at us for calling it like we see it? Jeez. Nature is at its best when it weeds out some of the people that need to be weeded out.....

I don't know why the woman driving the 2 guys that were killed wasn't smart enough to just tell the cops that one of the guys that were fighting was driving the car. At very least she should have done whatever possible to avoid a DUI.......

truth1: While the 3rd person was stupid for driving while drunk it may have been smarter for the driver to pull over so their wasn't a fight in the auto while she was still driving ... could have been alot worse outcome otherwise.

Some people, sorry to say, are just so disgustingly high and mighty, I get embarrassed for them because they have no idea how truly ignorant they sound picking on petty thinks such as grammar. Ugh. Seriously, if everyone where the same, wouldn't life be incredibly boring?? Go volunteer at the grade school as teacher's helpers if it is so necessary for you to correct people.

Am I the only one that actually made sense of the original article. It seems pretty clear to me which driver was cited for drunk driving. I don't even read posts from SarahB or Hannah anymore. It hurts too much. It's a language they speak everyday but for some reason typing anything in a complete and understandable sentence is way too difficult. As far as the accident...I feel bad for the woman that hit these two yahoos, but now there are two less idiots running around.

Authorities identified two men Thursday who were run over and died while fighting in a roadway Wednesday night.

A driver hit Avari D. Baker, 29, and Leonard L. Harris, 32, both of Freeport, Ill., Wednesday night just on the Wisconsin side of the state's border with Illinois.

The collision happened just after 11:30 p.m.

The men were passengers in a car in Lafayette County when they started arguing and the car's driver pulled over on Wisconsin Highway 78, according to a news release from the county sheriff's office. They were lying in the northbound lane of the road when a 33-year-old Monroe woman hit them with her Oldsmobile. The woman had two children in the car. She also was hospitalized with non-life threatening injuries.

The woman driving the car with the two male passengers was issued a citation alleging drunken driving, according to the news release.

Rude or not that part of the state does have a lot of hillbillies in it and that is a fact.

I'd say the drunk driver would be at least 50% at-fault since he/she(the article doesn't specify)was drunk....depending on their BA level...If they were twice-over, it should be more than 50%.
