Wis. agency funds prescription-drug collections
MADISON, Wis. (AP) — Wisconsin residents looking for a safe way to dispose of expired prescription drugs will now have their chance.
A state agency is sponsoring a series of prescription-drug collection events across Wisconsin through November.
The issue of what to do with leftover prescription drugs has become a growing concern. Many people flush them down toilets, but studies show the drugs can affect aquatic life or end up in trace amounts in drinking water.
But drugs also shouldn't be tossed in the garbage because kids might find them.
So the Wisconsin Department of Agriculture, Trade and Consumer Protection has distributed $75,000 in grants to county and municipal governments to fund the free collections.
There's a list of dates and locations on the agency's Web site.

The water in the aquifer comes from someplace. At least we aren't forced to treat river water that may have been contaminated upstream, or lake water, but we are still subject to seepage from agricultural and industrial uses above ground.
.
Basically, as high-tech as water treatment science is today, it's still better to keep bad things out of the water to begin with.

Country water tastes the best, but it is not necessarily the best for you. Municipal water has to meet stricter standards for nitrates and generally comes from deeper wells where larger amounts of trace minerals such as iron and manganese are present. This gives the water a bad taste and/or color. The water can be treated with sequestering agents that work by precipitating the minerals out. However, these precipitated minerals can provide a place for bacteria to grow, so the water must be treated with chlorine. And that, boys and girls, is why water in the country tastes better. Or is it less filling?
