EAU CLAIRE, Wis. (AP) — A manufacturing plant manager has been charged with letting toxic waste water into the Buffalo River in west-central Wisconsin.

Thomas Callaghan was charged Monday with a misdemeanor for the incident three years ago at Tremplo Manufacturing in Osseo, located just southeast of Eau Claire.

According to court documents, Callaghan had his employees pump acutely toxic industrial waste water into a storm sewer that led directly to the river.

The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources believes Tremplo released about 336 gallons of liquid an hour for several hours.

Callaghan has told the DNR that as plant manager he was responsible for the discharge.

Tremplo makes metal parts for industrial mixers.

Support clean water legislation in your area. Get involved with water quality monitoring at a place you think is problematic. Contact your local land conservation office for more details on how to help. When individuals provide documented proof of pollution, the EPA acts more swiftly. It also helps to VOTE and elect people into positions of power who share your views on conservation and preservation of natural resources.
I am just puzzled that this was a misdemeanor, and how others are also allowed to pollute (Chicago and Milwaukee included). While Wisconsin is a leader in water resource protection, this is proof there is still room for improvement.

How is this any different when the city of Milwaukee dumps millions of gallons of raw sewage into Lake Michigan? It happens often and does the DNR fine the Mayor? How about the foamy pods of whatever floating down the river from the Purina plant in Jefferson?

It's amazing our views on crime... dumping toxic waste into a river is a misdemeanor. How many folks get their drinking water from that area?

If someone where to become sick or die - and it could be proven - it would be a much tougher penalty. But as it stands... only a slap on the wrist.

Pathetic.
