Milton narrowly rejects 4K
The Milton School Board narrowly rejected moving forward on a 4-year-old kindergarten program Monday, voting 3-3 against the proposal.
Superintendent Bernie Nikolay had been looking for preliminary approval of a program before creating a detailed proposal. The deadlocked vote meant the motion failed.
Jan Bue-Wells, Jon Cruzan and Wilson Leong voted to give preliminary approval. Mike Pierce, Al Roehl and Bob Cullen voted against. President Rob Roy was absent.
About 80 percent of Wisconsin districts offer 4K, but Roehl said he doesn't believe there's a need for the program in Milton.

Pete, funny with the 3 economic courses I took in college I learned that to be a better more efficiant global economy is that farmers farm, teachers teach and doctors doctor. Back in the earliest forms of economics, you would barter for goods with your goods. If you don't have goods to barter with, you are out of luck. Your view of the river isn't a true reflection of global economics.

I don't see the harm in sending a child to school for 3 hours to learn to socialize and prepare for kindergarden. I think if the parents don't feel that it helps prepare then they can keep them home.

First of all, the school will be getting money for this program. The enrollment numbers will be up, and jobs will be created.
Pete, as far as taking from one to create another, I guess the American worker will have to settle for 50 cents an hour if they want to export to China. Basic economics teaches us that the country that can produce goods for the greatest profit should be the country that produces that product for the good of the world economy.

Is anyone really thinking of the kids here? Driving school bus, I see the exhausting effect all-day kindergarten has on five year olds. Now they're starting school for four year olds. These are tiny children, not tiny adults. When do they have a chance to be kids and develop normally?

“roaming hoards of homeless” nice, and “forcing someone to become homeless in our community” didn’t you read Milton school board is raising the taxes the maximum amount this year, they cannot raise it any more. They will probably do the same thing next year also. Please don’t tell me that someone is going to go homeless because their taxes went up, you should anticipate that, that is what the government dose, raise taxes. If you expect them to be able to control their spending so that they don’t raise taxes then you have your head in the sand. I am not saying that it is right however it is what it is. Taxes will go up and if you lose your home because of taxes then you have bigger budget issues.

Not needed?? Preschool enrollment is down this year in Milton. Likely because people can't afford to send their kids to the tune of over 100 bucks a month. Milton needs 4K. There are several people that went to Edgerton or other local districts to get their preschoolers in 4K. Milton is missing the boat. I think the board needs to reconsider.

4k is a wonderful program with a minimal cost when utilized like Beloit through its main daycare providers. To bad it is the Children who suffer.
