Ice arena decision on hold
JANESVILLE – The Janesville City Council put off a decision on a new ice arena Tuesday after a private group asked for more time.
The issue of whether to spend hundreds of thousands of city dollars on a new arena will return when the council meets Oct. 26. The group that is looking to raise private money to help build a new arena is expected to bring a revised proposal to the council on that date.
Meanwhile, the site of the proposed arena has become an issue. Some council members prefer a downtown site instead of the proposed site next to the east-side Youth Sports Complex.

Privatize, privatize, privatize. It is not the proper purpose of government to buy, build, maintain, or operate an ice arena! This is just ridiculous, and I forewarned you all that this debate would continue. It's a problem the city created, and it's a problem the city could solve, today, if they finally faced reality and decided to get out of the ice arena business. Failing that, this will continue to be a problem, probably as long as any of us will be around to keep paying for this white elephant.

Why not spend 2 million on an ice rink then ask city employees to take a pay cut?

With the possibility of property tax increases, the down turn in sales tax and other revenue collections, the need to pay for all the “school improvements” and Janesville’s tax base shrinking, how can the city justify spending $400,000+ dollars on an ice rink?
If the ice rink is really that, important I am willing to give it a chance, as long as PRIVATE donations TOTALLY pay for construction and maintenance of the facility for the first five years.

I prefer a downtown site. Why not? IT would benefit other local biz. with tourism $$$$. How many people do you think are going to come from out of town to see games? quite a few. What a great opportunity to spread some money other our downtown and prop up struggling local businesses

We're going to end up paying for this private-company to make a profit. How is that good for Janesville?

truthteller, you sources are way off. That site is way too small. They need 5-9acres and that site is not even close.
IvoteIspeak, I would be glad to sell my house to the city as I live in the 4th ward, at least I could get out of this city.

As far as I am concern the city has no buisness being in the ice rink business.

My sources say they want to build at the recently razed Energetics site. I just hope the powers that be hold off spending this much money until it's clear about the city's economic future.

hey i know lets just spend, spend, spend. I know why dont the city buy the whole 4th ward or look west and bulldoze it for this. Why not. how many other houses have they bought so they can bulldoze. the one by the armory the one by the park on washington. You go city council spend, spend, spend.

Bulldoze the GM plant flat and build it there with a trio of ice sheets. That would provide plenty of parking and room for expansion. Call it the Southern Wisconsin Regional Ice Arena. Next step, steal the Red Wings from Detroit using our new, improved, beer-vending, 3-sheets-to-the-wind facility! Payback to Michigan for the bribes to get GM to go with the Orion plant.

The big question is... Where downtown???,, there is really no place to build a facility that could house a dual sheet ice,, the east side sports complex would be and can house a facility the size of which would be required to build something like this... Anything in Janesville is no more that 15-20 minutes from anywhere.. access wise from the interstate should weigh in on a decision for this,,beside what kind of private and or corporate donations.. IMO..

I am all for a new rink, but I have to agree that the sports complex isnt the best location. great for off the interstate but nothing else really. If you ask where it should go... I have no logical spot. But neither here nor there and rink will be needed whether its for a junior hockey program or just for local use. it is far outdated and needs more than just a "face lift".

If the ice arena is eventually built, make it downtown. It could be a benefit to other local businesses. There is absolutely nothing around the Youth Sports Complex but the Gazette and houses.
