A University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee film student shot and killed while walking near his Riverwest apartment was the victim of a random robbery attempt, according to a 19-year-old suspect charged in the case.

Nathan Potter was shot July 6 in the 2500 block of North Dousman Street near his apartment in the Riverwest area of the city. He was 21.

One of two men charged Wednesday with felony murder in the case, Derek J. Thomas, 19, was arrested Tuesday, according to court records and Milwaukee police.

Seandell Jackson, 18, suspected of firing the weapon that killed Potter and injured another man about 12 hours later, remains at large. Thomas told police Jackson said he shot Nathan because he had no money.

Both men face up to 35 years in prison if convicted.

missing the point here....maximum 35 years in prison? How do they determine when you kill someone in cold blood if its life or 35 years? He was shot in cold blood and all they face is 35 years....do you realize they can be out on good behavior too before they are 55 years old? This state is so messed up

Thank God they didn't report the ethnicity of any of the involved subjects that's what this world is coming to)!

I heard that the suspects may actually be "Elbonian"!

Shooting someone for not having money...what the heck is going on in this world. I meant no disrespect to the victim of his family. Just amazed at what is happening in Wisconsin. I have a scanner, and many things that happen in Janesville never make the news. jmo
