Firm picked for UW project faces scandal
MADISON, Wis. (AP) — A consulting firm set to win millions in business from the University of Wisconsin System is facing an investigation and numerous lawsuits over accounting irregularities.
Chicago-based Huron Consulting Group Inc. said last month the Securities and Exchange Commission is investigating accounting problems related to past acquisitions. The firm was forced to restate its financial results dating back to 2006 and announced the departure of top executives.
The UW System picked Huron as the lead contractor in its plan to install an $81.4 million payroll and benefits computer system. The Board of Regents is expected to consider the plan Thursday.
Spokesman David Giroux says the system is reviewing the potential impact on the project and negotiating safeguards.

Napalm, the budget for the system is not out of line as it would involve at minimum servers and client software to be deployed to all UW System facilities with training and support requirements. Reasonable development and customization costs would run $100+/hour even when you start with a base system like Oracle or Peoplesoft. But this company was charging four times that for administrative personnel who weren't directly involved -- padding the contract.
